Contemporary Japanese composer Yuko Uebayashi moved to Paris in 1998. Uebayashi's works have been met with much success in both Japan and France Sonata for Flute and Piano being no exception. Flautist Jean Ferrandis described Uebayashi's works as 'gems that although they are so different they yet belong to the same world a world of vivacity dreams tenderness humour and one that is subtly contradicted by vehemence virtuosity melancholy and sorrow.' Sonata for Flute and Piano is made up of four movements with a typical performance lasting around 26 minutes. Telemann's Sonata (solo) for traverse flute and basso continuo comes from his 'Tafelmusik' published in 1733, one of the most important instrumental cycles of the late Baroque period. The prominent themes of the Sonata, especially of the first and last movements, seem to have impressed G. Fr. Handel so much that he took them up in his Organ Concerto #15 in D minor. The edition strictly follows the first edition published by Telemann himself, which made it possible to correct several errors in 20th-century editions. / Flûte Et Piano

This piece was originally written for Violin and Piano and if the 'New World' Symphony and the 'American' String Quartet are the best-known products of Anton n Dvorak's years in the United States the little Sonatina in G major(sometimes called the 'Indian Lament' Sonatina) may well be the most obscure; yet it is a charming work that deserves better than its relegation to the learning books of young violinists. The Sonatina is in four movements:Allegro risoluto Larghetto Scherzo (molto vivace) and Allegro. The first movement's principal tune has a firm rhythmic spine its second tune a gentle plaintiveness; there is just a hint of Americanfolk music in the movement.The following Larghetto earned the Sonatina its nickname. The succession of its three melodies - one in G minor one in B flat major and one in G major - has to it the same wistfulness and thesame sudden brightening and then softening of mood that we hear in the famous slow movement of the 'New World' Symphony.The Scherzo takes the very first gesture of the Allegro risoluto as its starting-point. The finale isa substantial sonata-allegro movement with three wonderful themes: the opening syncopated idea in G major a subsidiary thought in E minor very dancelike and built around a repeating marcato cell and finally a rich tranquillomelody that closes the exposition. This adaptation for Flute and Piano by James Galway conveys all the spirit of the original.

The melodies from George Gershwin's (1898-1937) musicals from 'Porgy and Bess' from orchestral pieces like 'Rhapsody in Blue' or 'An American in Paris' we all know them! But the career of the young musician started as a pianist in a music publishing house where he was to encourage customers to buy music by playing it. Soon he began to compose music himself and caught the attention of the Broadway which paved the way to his international career. Inspired by Frédéric Chopin's 24 Préludes he began to write his own 'Preludes' for the piano in the mid-1920s: Of the five preludes composed by him he used two for the violin composition 'Short Story' and presented the otherthree at a concert on 4 December 1926. These 'Preludes' combine classical moments and jazz elements into an effective whole and can be played individually or as a little jazz sonata (fast slow fast). Thanks to the present arrangement the charming miniatures are now available in a version for solo instrument and piano accompaniment.

Created in 1943 as part of the four exam pieces for the Paris Conservatoire this charming Sonatine for Flute and Piano is part of the early works of Henri Dutilleux (1916-2013) a French Composer following the paths of Maurice Ravel and Claude Debussy. Even though the composer was later quite critical about it this Sonatine which lasts 9 minutes is the most recorded of his compositions and has become a standard in the flute repertoire. Composed of three movements it begins with a tempo “Allegretto” followed by a part more “Andante” and finishes with a cadence “Animé”. Henri Dutilleux was internationally acclaimed for his work winning prizes such as the Gold Medal of the Royal Philharmonic Society and the UNESCO's International Rostrum of Composers among many others. His work also includes sonatas for piano and for oboe two symphonies the cello concerto Tout un monde lointain (A whole distant world) the violin concerto L'arbre des songes (The tree of dreams) and the string quartet Ainsi la nuit (Thus the night).
