für Violoncello und Klavier / for Violoncello and Piano-Camille Saint-Saëns Allegro Appassionato Op. 43 for Cello and Piano. Urtext edition score. At the beginning of the 1870s Saint-Saëns displayed a particular partiality for theVioloncello. He composed his first Cello sonata in December 1872 immediately after having completed the first Cello concerto. It was presumably directly after this that he wrote the Allegro Appassionato for Celloand Piano op. 43 that also appeared in a version for Orchestra three years later. We do not know why he wrote the work but it is likely that after having written two weighty works for Cello Saint-Saëns wanted towrite something ?easier? that was also suitable as an encore. In this Henle Urtext edition David Geringas has kindly provided the fingering and bowing for the brilliant Cello part.

The first piece Full Fathom Five is a version of the Shakespeare song setting made for Prospero'sBooks (1990).The second Angelfish Decay is an arrangement of an arrangement: the music for the speeded up time lapse decaying animal sequences in A Zed And Two Noughts (1985) was written for twoviolins and a harpsichord. This was subsequently 'reduced' to a violin solo for Zoo Caprices (1986). For On The Fiddle a piano part has been added. The final piece Miserere Paraphrase was writtenfor use in The Cook The Thief His Wife And Her Lover (1989) and is a transcription of Nyman's setting of the 'Miserere' text (Psalm 51) sung in the film by a boy soprano and mixed chorus. This version for celloand piano written in 1997. In memory of Christopher Rowland. Originally a concerto for Cello and chamber orchestra now for Cello with a Piano reduction of the orchestral part. The concerto is in four movements which are played without a break: Meditation Intermezzo Toccata-Scherzo and Song. The work lasts for some 18 minutes and was scored for two oboes two horns timpani (doubling tubular bells) and strings(found here in a Cello/Piano form). It is organised in one large arch-shaped structure with two fast inner movements flanked by two outer slow ones. The solo cello opens the work reflectively and introduces core melodic material which is continuously developed throughout theconcerto. Gradually the strings enter then wind and timpani and build a pyramid twelve-note chord at the peak of which there is a dramatic climax. The music then subsides (solo cello again) but links to the two faster middle movements. The second movement Intermezzo has an ABA structure and in its middle section quotes the opening of Shostakovich's Third String Quartet (written in the same year as Christopher Rowland was born!). Indeed the ghost of Shostakovich looms large throughout the concerto in more ways than one. The Toccata-Scherzo is energetic and rhythmically-charged again using an ABA structure. Here the writing for solo cello is quite virtuosic but not I hope in a shallow sense. The music builds inexorably towards a powerful climax underpinned by the opening twelve-note chord's re-appearance together with a violent outburst from the timpani at which point a tonal resolution (on G) arrives through a pianissimo held chord on strings which leads directly to the final movement - Song. And so the music arrives at its emotional heart through a simple melody (present in other forms throughout the work) announced by solo cello at the very top of its register against a quiet backdrop of horns and strings. A solo oboe enters with cello in canonic reply and all the time the music builds in texture and

Cello: Cello, Piano [Sheet music] Barenreiter

Like every other great 19th-century solo concerto Dvorák?s famous Cello Concerto was a collaboration between composer and virtuoso. It has long been known that certain solo passages in Dvorák?s autograph score were actually written by the cellist Hanu? Wihan; but Bärenreiter?s edition now reveals that some details in the Orchestral parts are also in his writing showing just how closely the two musicians were working together. The editor Jonathan Del Mar has painstakingly examined all the surviving sources including two that have hitherto been either ignored or crucially undervalued in order to produce anauthoritative edition which restores for the first time since the original edition was published in 1896 - Dvorák?s final and definitive version of the solo Cello part. This differs in details in almost every bar from the version found in all other modern editions while hundreds of corrections have also been made to the Orchestral parts.- With Dvorák?s final and definitive version of the solo Cello part.- With hundreds of corrections in the solo Cello part as well as the Orchestral parts.- With hitherto unknown details regarding the collaboration between Dvorák and Wihan.- With Dvorák?s original Piano reduction.- With Feuermann's and Casals' alternatives to a passage in the first movement.- Full score performance material (BA9045) Cello & Piano (BA9045-90) & Facsimile (BVK1849) available for sale.

A highly respected cello teacher and performer, Alfred Earnshaw counted among his peers such notable twentieth-century composers of music for young cellists as Adam Carse and W. H. Squire. His Tarantella for cello and piano features on Children's Cello the delightful collection of cello miniatures recorded by Steven Isserlis and pianist Stephen Hough on a recent BIS recording (BISCD1562). Earnshaw commanded a fluent, graceful idiom ideally suited to inspire beginners with real musical values, and the piece combines open-string and first-position playing with the flair and character of an impressive recital item.

The E minor Cello Sonata is the first work for one solo instrument and Piano which the meticulous composer also had printed. In summer 1865 Brahms offered it to the publisher Simrock as a sonata “whose twoinstruments are both absolutely easy to play” – and rightly so: contrary to the later F-major Sonata op. 99 (HN 1135) this early sonata is technically less demanding yet musically more striking at the same time sothat it is a hit with amateurs and professionals alike. This Henle edition is based on the new Brahms Complete Edition and thus boasts besides in-depth comments a musical text revised according to the latest scholarlyfindings; as always the Cello part is enhanced with additional markings.

The autograph score of Lalo’s much played concerto is lost. Written in 1876 the only remaining sources are the first edition score and parts as well as the autograph Piano reduction by Lalo. Hugh Macdonald the highly acclaimed editor of French music has discovered that Lalo’s Piano reduction was used as a working score by Lalo himself. He continued to make alterations to the work in the reduction even after the work was officially published. These changes provide for many corrections in the solo part as we know it but also call for some orchestral passages to be re-orchestrated to match up with Lalo’s finalalterations.First ever critical edition of this romantic masterpiece.Preface in English / German / French.Score orchestral parts Piano reduction.First ever critical commentary (Eng) integrated in the score.Full score and parts (BA6999) and Cello & Piano reduction (BA6999-90) available for sale.

for Violoncello and Piano-After the great success of his Élégie (HN 563) Fauré?s publisher Hamelle urged him to write another similarly effective piece for cello and piano. Papillon was probably already composed in 1884 though it was only published in1898. Whereas Fauré just wanted to call it ?Piece for violoncello? his publisher insisted on a more evocative title and ultimately succeeded in giving it its present name (meaning ?butterfly?). But Fauré is said to have beenindignant remarking: ?Butterfly or dung fly use whatever you want?. The success of the work proved Hamelle right Papillon is today just as popular with cellists as the Élegie and is now available as a Henle Urtext edition.
