Ashoob (Calligraphy No. 14) was written for Dariush Saghafi and the Carpe Diem String Quartet. Reza Valis ?Calligraphies? series isa set of an ongoing cycle of works based on the Persian modal system the ?Dastgâh? which he has been composing since2000. The basic compositional material of the work is derived from a fast tempo genre called the ?Reng ? which is usually performed at the end of a traditional Persian music concert. Versions for Persian Santoor with string quartet (original) andfor string quartet only are available from the publisher. The original version was premiered on March 18-20 2016 at the McConnell Arts Center in Columbus Ohio by Dariush Saghafi Santoor and the Carpe Diem String Quartet.

Written for Cuarteto Latinoamericano this 4-movement work marks a stylistic shift from Vali's first quartet which followed mid-20th Century atonal and serial techniques. In contrast String Quartet No. 2 is a fusion oftraditional Persian melodic modes with Western classical harmonic and formal sensibilities.

8 Timeless Pieces Arranged for String Quartet-Vivaldi was a prolific composer very much a string composer but also responsible for a wide variety of other work. This selection includes extracts from The Seasons - arguably the composer's most well-known work as well as other less well-known vocal and instrumental music. The two extracts from the concerto for two mandolins and the concerto for two trumpets remind us that the composer did not restrict himself only to concertos for string instruments.
