Born in Oxford in 1917, Francis Baines was a well-known and much respected professional double bass player. He studied at the Royal College of Music in London with Claude Hobday, where he later taught. Something of an eccentric,he immersed himself in early music at a time when few people were taking it seriously. He owned a beautiful Amati bass that he had restored as a violone, which it probably was originally, and he was a regular fixture as aprincipal player in a number of orchestras and ensembles that dedicated themselves to period performing, including those directed by Denys Darlow, with whom he broadcast and recorded frequently.
Besides playing thedoublebass, Francis Baines was an exponent of the treble viol and led the Jaye Consort of Viols which he founded. He also played several kinds of bagpipe and the hurdy-gurdy. As a composer he dabbled in many styles, one of hisgreatest claims to fame being that of writing for the popular Hoffnung concerts in the 1960s.
He was the author of a number of papers about the history of the double bass, sometimes arriving at scholarly conclusionsthat were colourful, if not always entirely accurate. He discovered the Giovannino del Violone sonatas, subsequently published by Yorke Edition, although today it is thought that they were probably not written for a 16' pitchinstrument at all. His edition of the Capuzzi double bass concerto, published by Boosey & Hawkes, was for many years one of the few solo works available for the instrument. This, however, he largely re-composed because hethought it could be improved: towards the end of his life he confessed that with hindsight he probably should have treated it differently.
Grounds was written in 1969 as a sort of party piece and was given to YorkeEdition in support of a drive to enlarge the repertoire for the instrument in a wide variety of styles. It was set on the syllabus of the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music for many years.

Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto op. 64, is a key work of the 19th century, adhering to the classical style of Beethoven while pointing the way to the romantic ethos of Brahms. It has long been known that Mendelssohn performed the work with three soloists in succession: Ferdinand David, who worked closely with the composer during its composition and played it at the premiere; the 'child prodigy' Joseph Joachim; and Hubert Leonard, a young Belgian virtuoso about whom little is known.
As proof sheets for the Violin Concerto in E minor were long considered lost, it could be described as somewhat of a sensation when proofs for the solo violin part resurfaced together with a letter from Mendelssohn to Leonard.
The letter informs us that the composer invited Leonard to his home in Frankfurt in order to make his acquaintance. It was already known that Mendelssohn had given proof sheets to David; now we know that he also gave some to Leonard.
The recently discovered proofs reveal how Leonard played the concerto with Mendelssohn on that memorable evening in February 1845. Besides containing bowing marks and fingering, they also show how Leonard executed shifts of position and where he employed open strings. Furthermore modifications made to dynamic markings and additional legato bowing are shown.
It is safe to assume that all of this was done with Mendelssohn's approval. That the young violinist made a positive impression on the composer is confirmed in the latter's correspondence following their joint performance. Mendelssohn is full of praise for Leonard's playing and offers to lend his support in finding employment in Germany.
This revised edition of the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto (only the orchestral parts remain unchanged) includes a separate booklet on performance practice.
The editor, Clive Brown, is an acknowledged expert on Romantic performance practice.

He owned a beautiful Amati bass that he had restored as a violone which it probably was originally and he was a regular fixture as a principal player in a number of orchestras and ensembles that dedicated themselves to period performing including those directed by Denys Darlow with whom he broadcast and recorded frequently.Besides playing the doublebass Francis Baines was an exponent of the treble viol and led the Jaye Consort of Viols which he founded. He also played several kinds of bagpipe and the hurdy-gurdy. As a composer he dabbled in many styles one of his greatest claims to fame being that of writing for the popular Hoffnung concerts in the 1960s. He was the author of a number of papers about the history of the double bass sometimes arriving at scholarly conclusions that were colourful if not always entirely accurate. He discovered the Giovannino del Violone sonatas subsequently published by Yorke Edition although today it is thought that they were probably not written for a 16' pitch instrument at all. His edition of the Capuzzi double bass concerto published by Boosey & Hawkes was for many years one of the few solo works available for the instrument. This however he largely re-composed because he thought it could be improved: towards the end of his life he confessed that with hindsight he probably should have treated it differently.Grounds was written in 1969 as a sort of party piece and was given to Yorke Edition in support of a drive to enlarge the repertoire for the instrument in a wide variety of styles. Le cahier bois de rose est l'un d'eux - c'est en regard de ces archives mystérieuses pour moi que j'ai ainsi nommé mon cycle d'oeuvres de musique de chambre, s'étalant sur une période de cinq années.Chacune des pièces de ce cycle est construite de la même façon - sont interprétées toutes les esquisses, tentatives de mise en forme, réflexions diverses que j'ai pu noter au fil des mois - et le sujet de chaque oeuvre est un objet concret : ici une étoffe, là une allumette ou une pomme de terre. Je l'écoute, je le regarde, je le note, je l'analyse, j'en appréhende les contours réels, philosophiques et poétiques.La fébrilité musicale des objets que j'ai choisis de subjectiver est telle que la musique flirte souvent avec le silence et le bruit. La forme faite d'esquisses successives nous invite à prendre chaque moment comme s'il fallait s'y arrêter. Quand nous en vînmes au trait du scherzo de la symphonie en ut mineur de Beethoven, qui figurait dans le programme, il nous sembla entendre les grognements d'une cinquantaine de porcs effarouchés : telle était l'incohérence et le défaut de justesse de l'exécution de ce passage. Peu à peu cependant elle devint meilleure, l'ensemble s'établit et la phrase apparut nettement dans toute sa sauvage rudesse'.
Hector Berlioz, Mémoires, Chapitre LIII
Dans ses Mémoires, Hector Berlioz, compositeur français de l'époque romantique (1803-1869) se tenait 'pour satisfait de pouvoir organiser et diriger un concert gigantesque' pour lequel il parvint 'à réunir un personnel de mille vingt deux exécutants'. Cette citation relate les répétitions partielles (par pupitre) du scherzo de la cinquième symphonie de Beethoven placées sous sa direction pour un concert exceptionnel donné à Paris lors de l'Exposition des produits de l'industrie en 1844. Ce scherzo réputé difficile pour la justesse, la conduite de l'archet et la manière de l'interpréter devenait particulièrement délicat, exécuté par un pupitre de trente-six contrebasses.
Depuis l'époque de Berlioz, l'apprentissage de la contrebasse a évolué. Les professeurs enseignant dans les structures musicales permettent à nos élèves de devenir de vrais contrebassistes, de vrais techniciens, de vrais professionnels, de vrais musiciens. Néanmoins, le travail de pupitre (ou répétitions partielles) reste indispensable.
Contrebassiste au sein de l'Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse pendant quarante ans, mon expérience professionnelle m'a permis de découvrir un vaste répertoire musical. De la musique symphonique à la musique de chambre en passant par le répertoire lyrique, j'ai pu aborder tous les styles de musique depuis l'époque baroque à la musique contemporaine. Les grands chefs d'orchestre qui m'ont dirigé m'ont appris à connaître tous les grands compositeurs de notre musique occidentale, la manière d'interpréter une oeuvre, de la comprendre et de l'analyser. Nous devons écouter et surtout entendre. J'ai voulu donc, par ce premier recueil, transmettre ce que j'avais appris à l'Orchestre et permettre aux élèves de découvrir ce répertoire musical.
Professeur de contrebasse au CRD de Montauban, j'ai mis au programme du premier cycle et expérimenté avec mes élèves tous les textes présentés dans ce recueil. Les jeunes contrebassistes ont toujours été très sensibles au travail des extraits musicaux. Ils sont au contact avec la Musique. Afin de parachever leur travail personnel, il est souhaitable qu'ils écoutent les musiques étudiées (enregistrements et concerts). Ces acquisitions leur permettront de découvrir les compositeurs et d'apprendre le langage musical.
Ce recueil pédagogique offre un voyage musical de l'époque baroque à l'époque postromantique (de Johann Sebastian Bach à Camille Saint-Saëns). Il est destiné aux élèves du premier cycle des conservatoires et écoles de musique. Les professeurs pourront commencer à l'aborder dès la première année.
Tous les extraits musicaux sont tirés du répertoire d'orchestre : de chambre, lyrique et symphonique. Ils sont joués dans la tonalité originale.
Les coups d'archet originaux sont notés en noir. Les coups d'archet préconisés par les contrebassistes professionnels jouant dans les plus grandes formations orchestrales symphoniques ou lyriques en France et à l'étranger sont ajoutés en rouge.

Good work for examinations and recitals by an important British composer. Duration c.6'. AMEB (Australian Syllabus) 2004. Programme notes as follows:Lennox Berkeley was born in 1903 and died in 1989. After reading modern languages at Oxford he had no intention of becoming a composer until he met Ravel in 1926 who encouraged him to study in Paris with Nadia Boulanger. He stayed in Paris until 1932 developing his own musical language. In 1936 after the death of his mother he went to Barcelona for the International Society for Contemporary Music festival where he met Benjamin Britten. The two lived together at Snape in Suffolk for a while until the outbreak ofwar before Berkeley moved back to London to work for the BBC. Here he met his future wife Freda Bernstein. He taught at the Royal Academy of Music in London from 1946 until 1968 where his pupils included Richard Rodney Bennett Nicholas Maw and John Tavener among others. He was knighted in 1974. In early February 1971 I was playing in a concert at St. John's Smith Square London then only relatively recently restored as a superb venue for music. The programme which I believe was being broadcast included Berkeley's Serenade Op.12. It was a work I had always enjoyed playing and was standard string orchestra repertoire at the time. There was initially no platform at St. John's and so the audience sat virtually on top of the performers. So close were they on this occasion that I had to ask for a little more room in order to play. At the end of the piece the orchestra acknowledged the applause and the gentleman who I had all but practically decapitated with my over-enthusiastic playing stood up and took a bow. I had been almost playing in Lennox Berkeley's lap! The opportunity was too good to miss and I wasted little time in introducing myself. Mr Berkeley said that he had been fascinated by my playing and asked me to write to him about a possible commission.This I did on 6 February mentioning that

Elle vise à donner dès les premiers exercices le plaisir de jouer. La progression se veut ludique. Chaque leçon se découpe en trois parties : - La première, la plus technique, se compose d'exercices pour la sonorité et l'agilité des doigts. - La deuxième propose des duos. L'élève, dès le début, joue avec son professeur. Cela lui permet d'accéder à la musique de chambre, de se former l'oreille, d'entendre son professeur jouer une partie plus difficile que la sienne, ainsi que de se produire assez rapidement ! - La troisième partie est principalement constituée de pièces accompagnées par le piano.

Par RAVEL MAURICE. In 1922 Maurice Ravel heard the young Hungarian violin virtuoso and niece of Joseph Joachim, Jelly D'Aranyi, in concert in London. Following the performance, Ravel spent the remainder of the evening requesting D'Aranyi to play numerous gypsy tunes on her violin, probing her on the technical limits of the instrument. The result of this encounter is Ravel's virtuoso classic 'Tzigane”.
Written originally for violin and piano or luthéal (a mechanism invented in 1919 that attaches to a piano, producing a sound similar to the rich overtones of the Cimbalon), the premiere took place in London in April 1924. The composer had finished the work only days beforehand. Ravel later orchestrated 'Tzigane” and both versions remain a 'must” for music-lovers and aspiring violinists today. Jelly D'Aranyi performed both versions regularly throughout her long career.
This Urtext edition presents the first scholarly-critical edition of Ravel's masterpiece. It is published both in the orchestral version, complete with full score and performance material, as well as in the composer's earlier version for violin and piano. All known sources, including letters, have been drawn on for the new edition - one of the available sources, consulted for the first time, was a copy of 'Tzigane” from the estate of Jelly D'Aranyi, which is today part of a private collection.
The version for piano and violin contains, besides the Urtext part, a second violin part as a facsimile with performance instructions by Jelly D'Aranyi. D'Aranyi's alterations and fingering reflect how Ravel must have heard the work in rehearsals and performance and as such are a document of early 20th century performance practice. The cooperation between Ravel and D'Aranyi is comparable to that of Brahms and Joachim working on the Brahms violin concerto.
