Demanding salon music for string quartet (with double-bass ad libitum) is provided by Wolfgang Birtel in his 'Latin Dances' with four titles which can be played individually or as a little suite. The first dance is the chorinho 'Não me toques' by Zequinha de Abreu (1880-1935) who not only wrote 'Tico Tico' but also other rousing pieces of music. Ernesto Nazareth (1863-1934) is considered to be the 'inventor' of the Brazilian tango and waltz: He titled the waltz, which follows as second title, 'Ingenious'. These rather unknown titles are followed by two absolute worldwide hits: 'Bolada de Aficionado' by A.G. Villoldo and then the everlasting beguine 'Bésame Mucho' by the Mexican composer Consuelo Velázques (1916-2005). Whether individually or as a 'four-pack' - the fingers will be twitching and the toes will be tingling for this music carries away musicians and audience alike. / Quatuor A Cordes

Mon deuxième quatuor à cordes, Crescent Scratches, s'inscrit dans la continuité du premier, Scratches, sans toutefois recourir au dispositif électronique qui, dans le premier quatuor, me permettait d'amplifier les timbres et de transformer le son en temps réel.Le terme de 'crescent scratch' provient des techniques de jeu développées par les DJ sur leurs platines vinyles ('scratch' ou 'scratching') que l'on retrouve dans le hip-hop et les musiques industrielles.Crescent Scratches est conçu à partir de deux principales idées : le glissando saturé (fréquemment pulsé), assimilable au 'scratch', provoqué par l'aller-retour du disque sur la platine, et la notion de boucle qui consiste à reproduire une même séquence, variée ou non. J'ai conçu des boucles et agi sur leur vitesse d'exécution, sur leur superposition en strates et leur traitement par caractéristiques de timbre. Cela finit par rendre quasiment imperceptible le retour des boucles - un phénomène qui m'a particulièrement intéressé dans cette composition. La boucle se meut en micro-élément, moteur d'une intense activité dans une macrostructure, cette macrostructure elle-même étant dès lors perçue comme une masse totalement saturée en évènements.La continuité entre ces deux quatuors se situe pour moi du côté du timbre et plus précisément dans la notation des différentes positions et pressions d'archet engendrant une large palette de sonorités saturées créant comme une aura autour du son des instruments. L'idée de 'scratch' comme onomatopée décrivant une rayure, une éraflure, une rupture ou une déchirure reste également au centre du propos de Crescent Scratches.Au-delà de l'électronique, l'endroit où se décèle la différence entre ces deux quatuors est dans la structuration de la forme et la gestion des événements. Crescent Scratches s'organise en un bloc d'une grande densité dans le traitement simultané des quatre instruments qui s'unissent là où, dans Scratches, j'articulais la forme en une succession de moments en solo, duo, trio et tutti.Yann Robin / Quatuor A Cordes

Par WIBERNY HEINER. Heiner Wiberny has written this joyful composition for his wife Ulla, who has a special affinity for African Music. The listener recognizes immediately the sound and flavor of 'African Highlife” and 'Latin Funk”. The composition consists of the following parts: chorale-intro, prelude, ABA-theme, transition, violin- and violasolos with 'break'-intros, prelude, AB-theme, Coda. The soloists may play either the written transcriptions or their own improvised solos, whereby the corresponding ensemble sections can be repeated. The phrase markings offer help in the correct stylistic interpretation of the piece, but they can also be changed according to the individual preferences. 'Klaus the fiddler” (Klaus der Geiger) gave the world premier of this work with the String Quartet of the Cologne Kunst-Salon Orchestra (Streichquartett des Kölner Kunstsalonorchesters). Impressions On Beethoven's Harp Quartet. Par AMANTI LUCIO. When Cuarteto Casals approached me with the idea of illuminating Beethoven´s quartets anew, you can imagine the many thoughts and feelings that where going through my mind: what a joy, what a great honor… What an intriguing head-scratcher! How can you possibly shine a new light on something that is already perfect? Weeks, months went by in search of a common ground between the Master and myself until I finally found it in the realization that a word lays “hidden” in the St. John’s hymn that gave musical notes their original name: ‘Re, Sol, Ut, Io’ (D, G, C, B in English music notation) Perfect! “Resolutio” in Latin means both the resolution of a problem and the re-solution: a re-blend of many elements that will eventually coagulate to make something new. There was finally the melodic and a rhythmical canvas for my piece. On this canvas I wrote the story of a funny little contest, played on a sunny Mediterranean square, between street musicians and Cuarteto Casals just minutes before they are about to go on stage to perform Beethoven´s “Harp Quartet”. After all the characters, each in his own way, had the chance to tell their story, a gentle rain starts to fall, dissolving (Re-solving) again the music sheet to eventually leave us with just a white piece of paper for somebody else to continue the Work. Amara signifie en latin ' amertume ', En écho à la phrase de Khalil Gibran placée en épigraphe, l'oeuvre se propose en effet d'exprimer un sentiment de douce tristesse à la pensée de quelque souvenir heureux mais évanoui, Le beau timbre, chaud et triste à la fois, de l'alto permet de chanter cette sorte d'élégie hésitant entre tendresse et douleur, L'oeuvre déploie tout d'abord un chant étreignant comme secoué de sanglots, Une seconde partie expose une mélodie qui tente d'esquisser un sourire à travers les larmes, Mais le chant initial reprend le dessus et enfle jusqu'à un climax presque chargé de colère, La pièce retombe alors dans une sorte de torpeur nostalgique, et se termine sur un sentiment doux-amer ambigu, hésitant entre majeur et mineur, / Alto Et Piano

In contrast String Quartet No. 2 is a fusion oftraditional Persian melodic modes with Western classical harmonic and formal sensibilities.
