Adagio and Allegro is one of the first works of major importance written for the valve Horn. The original title was Romance and Allegro. It was composed during the first few months of 1849 a period when Schumann also composed solo works for Oboe and Piano Clarinet and Piano as well as the Konzertstucke for four Horns and Orchestra. Edited for French Horn and Piano by Barry Tuckwell.

Full Score-The Horn Concerto was written in 1971 and was the first of the ten concertos Gregson has composed to date. It is dedicated to the English horn player Ifor James who died in 2004 and was originally written for brass band. However in 2013 Gregson was asked by Paul Klein Principal Horn of the Ulster Orchestra and BBC Northern Ireland to undertake an orchestral version for him.  Gregson decided to score the concerto for a late Haydn sized orchestra with the addition of a percussionist to add some colour to the texture. The concerto takes as its starting point the Mozartian model namely a sonata form opening movement a song-like slow movement and a jaunty rondo finale. The opening movement opens with a strident motif built on rising fourths announced by the soloist and answered by the orchestra. This pattern of ‘question/answer’ continues until a climactic moment breaks the tension and is followed by a lyrical second subject announced by the soloist over undulating rhythmic patterns on strings. The music is developed and recapitulated from these ideas with the lyrical idea returning via solo clarinet with horn answering in canon. The movement ends with the strident fourths this time in inversion. The slow movement is in tertiary form and opens with an expansive melody from the soloist over a repetitive harmonic and melodic pattern. This is expanded and developed building all the while in intensity until it is interrupted by cadenza-like passages on the horn and muted brass. After a brief climax the music subsides into a moment of emotional serenity before the opening melody returns this time on solo oboe with the horn interweaving its own answering melodic lines. The rondo finale is more light-hearted in mood with a catchy 6/8 tune at its heart. It is twice interrupted first by an idea built on long held chromatic notes from the soloist against a highly rhythmic backdrop (wind brass and snare drum) then by a slower more thoughtful melodic idea. As if looking back on his youth toward the end of his life Richard Strauss wrote a second concerto for horn and orchestra again in Eb major around sixty years after his first concerto for horn. This sublimely beautiful late work which gives no indication of the oppressive circumstances of Strauss? poor health and the Second World War was premiered in 1943 by Gottfried von Freiberg under the direction of Karl Böhm. It was not until after Strauss? death that the concerto appeared in print in London making a critical new edition on the basis of the autograph sources and performance material more than overdue. The editor Hans Pizka former principal horn of the BavarianState Opera in Munich learned first-hand about the performance tradition and genesis of the concerto as a pupil of Gottfried von Freiberg. For use in lessons and for performances the especially playable piano reduction by Johannes Umbreit is a great help. Having won many prizes at the Paris Conservatoire during the 1920s and 1930s Eugène Bozza went on to conduct the orchestra of the Opéra-Comique and to become Head of the Conservatoire in Valenciennes. As a major figure on the classical music frontline Bozza's compositions were well-received by audiences En Foret being no exception. This Bozza piece for French Horn and Piano masterfully combines a virtuosic Horn solo with impressionistic Piano accompaniment. The composer includes reminders of the Horn's hunting roots with frequent uses of call and response throughout. As a music educator PaulGriffiths has written of Bozza's compositions saying how 'his works reveal melodic fluency elegance of structure and a consistently sensitive concern of instrumental capabilities.'

Mozart composed his Rondo In E-Flat Major for Horn and Orchestra on 21 March 1781 just five days after his move from Munich to Vienna. The Rondo was most likely intended as a final movement of what would have been Mozart's first Horn concerto.
