The book is written in notation and tablature with above average backup chords suggested for the solos.While written with the flatpicking guitarist in mind fingerstyle and classic players would also benefit from sightreading these pieces. The original solos present a wealth of bluegrass and swing material that can be played with arhythm guitarist or the companion CD which includes all of the tunes and exercises in the book. The solos are presented in the keys of C/Am (no sharps or flats) the sharp-bearing major and relative minor keys through Emajor/C# minor (4 sharps) and in the flat-bearing keys and their relative minor keys through E-flat major/C minor (3 flats). Ton Van Bergeyk launched his career as a musician during the late 1960s playing blues Harp and Ukulele in a duo setting, but he then switched to the acoustic Guitar and quickly learned and mastered the instrument using fingerstyle techniques. He started to transcribe and arrange classic ragtime compositions for fingerpicking Guitar and was discovered by Stefan Grossman during a tour in Holland. Stefan produced Ton's first solo album, Famous Ragtime Guitar Solos, in 1973. This contained 14 of Ton's arrangements of classic ragtime pieces and became a best seller. In 1975, Ton's second solo album, Guitar Instrumentals To Tickle Your Fingers, was released containing transcriptions and arrangements of novelty rags, early jazz and popular tunes of the 1930s and 1940s. In 1980, Ton's third solo album was released and continued his exploration of arrangements for solo fingerpicking Guitar, this time with a repertoire covering jazz, blues, contemporary pop and country and even Mexican folklore. This album was titled Lulu's Back In Town, Hot Guitar Solos. Ton also participated in several anthology projects, i.e. Novelty Guitar Instrumentals, I Got Rhythm, Masters of Ragtime Guitar, The Entertainer and How To Play Ragtime Guitar. All of Ton's albums are available as CDs as well as direct downloads from Stefan Grossman's Guitar Workshop, (www.guitarvideos.com) and include tab PDF booklets on the CDs. As such, there is only a minimum of discussion about the technical aspects of playing. Students who have already dealt with the American style called fingerpicking or fingerstyle guitar, which is quite distinct from other kinds of guitar playing, will be at an advantage. The easiest arrangements here are early intermediate level, while the other end of the scale includes pieces that may challenge even a professional. Tunes within each section are presented generally in order of difficulty. The bulk of the tunes presented are fiddle tunes, with a couple of banjo tunes and several songs as well as tunes originally played on other instruments such as harp, pipes, or accordion. There are even a small number composed for the guitar. For the most part, differences in approach among the tunes here are unrelated to the instrumental sources. The solos in this collection present a myriad of moods on the guitar. They were written to be very expressive contemplative pieces which could be performed in a variety of secular and sacred settings. Most of them are fromthree solo collections previously released entitled 'Guitar Meditations' (MB22029) 'Guitar Airs and Ballads' (MB22039) and 'Timeless Solos for Guitar' (MB22041). Some of the pieces were scored for 7-string guitar; however theycan also be performed on 6-string guitar?indicated are the alternate 6-string pedal tones in the tablature part. Many of the solos use a 'cross-picking' technique alternating higher position closed strings and open strings resulting in a ?harp-like? effect. The included tablature parts allow for a clear presentation of this effect and clarify where on the fingerboard these passages should be played. A number of the pieces are in Dropped D tuning highlighting the rich resonance that tuning gives the instrument. All of these solos may be performed by the classical or fingerstyle guitarist or as originally performed with a pick.
