For Cityscapes, the composer used the metropolis of New York, the largest city of the United States, as a source of inspiration. The first movement mirrors the skyline of the ‘Big Apple’. Citadel’s Destiny is a march that can be performed either in concert or on parade. It was commissioned by the Musique de l’Infanterie de Lille. A special feature is that it adheres to the conventional codes of military marches, albeit with a modern twist. The title refers to the citadel built by Vauban in Lille, “The Queen of Citadelsâ€, with which the band shares a destiny. This march is still performed by the Infantry Band as part of their traditional concert repertoire.Citadel’s Destiny kan dienen als loopmars, maar is ook geschikt voor een concert. Het werk is geschreven in opdracht van la Musique de l’Infanterie de Lille. Een speciaal kenmerk: het is gemaakt volgens de conventionele voorschriften voor militaire marsen, maar dan met een moderne twist. De titel verwijst naar de door Vauban gebouwde citadel in Lille, ‘La Reine des Citadelles’, waarmee de band een lotsbestemming deelt. Deze mars wordt nog steeds uitgevoerd door la Musique de l’Infanterie, als onderdeel van het traditionele concertrepertoire.Citadel's Destiny ist ein Marsch, der sowohl im Konzert als auch bei einer Parade aufgeführt werden kann. Composer Jacob de Haan has based The Heart of Lithuania on five folk melodies from Lithuania, a country that despite its small size has a rich cultural heritage. The choice and diversity of emotions, largely determined by the characteristic melodies, take the listener straight to the heart of the Lithuanian people. Litouwen, de grootste van de drie Baltische staten, is gezegend met een rijk cultureel erfgoed. Componist Jacob de Haan heeft The Heart of Lithuania gebaseerd op vijf volksmelodieën die met name geliefd waren in de tweede helftvan de twintigste eeuw. Hoewel alle vijf de liederen afkomstig zijn uit de Auk¹taitija-regio, zijn ze populair in heel Litouwen, ze worden nog altijd gezongen door jonge mensen in de steden en dorpen. Petit territoire situé sur la rive orientale de la mer Baltique, la Lituanie est divisée en cinq régions ethnographiques : la Samogitie, la Haute Lituanie, la Sudovie, la Dzūkija et la Petite Lituanie. Chaque région a son dialecte, son costume traditionnel, ses coutumes, son artisanat, ses fêtes et jours fériés et surtout ses propres chants traditionnels chantés depuis près d’un millénaire. Pour composer The Heart of Lithuania (“Au cœur de la Lituanieâ€), Jacob de Haan s’est inspiré de cinq mélodies traditionnelles particulièrement en vogue dans la seconde moitié du XXe siècle. Bien que ces chantsproviennent de Haute Lituanie, ils sont appréciés sur l’ensemble du territoire et sont encore chantés aujourd’hui. Le choix des chants et la diversité des émotions qu’ils expriment travers des lignes mélodiques typées emportent l’auditeur au cœur de l’ me lituanienne.

Evolution was commissioned by Kunstfactor for the 4th section of the Dutch National Brass Band Championships (NBK) 2011. It is dedicated to Jappie Dijkstra and the Music Information Centre (MUI), Arnhem, Holland, in acknowledgement of their outstanding work in developing brass band repertoire. The composer writes:-The idea for the piece came when I was reading an article about a branch of Chinese philosophy which is abbreviated as Wu Xing, which has no exact translation but can mean, for example, five elements, five phases or five states of change. It is central to all elements of Chinese thought, including science, philosophy, medicine and astrology, and in simpleterms tries to create various cyclic relationships between five elements in all walks of life. An example is: Earth - Metal - Water - Wood - Fire - (Earth) etc. where (in one cycle) earth bears metal, metal changes to liquid (water) when heated, water helps trees grow, wood burns to create fire, fire produces ash (earth) and the cycle continues.I was particularly interested in the cycle of emotions: Meditation - Sorrow - Fear - Anger - Joy - (Meditation) etc. and thought this cyclic principle would provide an effective emotional journey for a piece of music. So Evolution has five equal sections which loosely characterise this emotional cycle. I have tried to make the music grow organically, with minimal repetition, and each movement evolves from the musical elements at the end of the previous one, with the opening material appearing, transformed, at the end of the piece to complete the cycle. Het gaat om een wezenlijk onderdeel van allecomponenten binnen het Chinese gedachtegoed, inclusief de wetenschap, filosofie, geneeskunst en astrologie. Simpel gezegd draait het om het creëren van diverse cyclische verbanden tussen vijf elementen die in ieders leven een rol spelen. Een voorbeeld: Aarde - Metaal - Water - Hout - Vuur - (Aarde) enz. In deze cyclus bevat aarde metaal; metaal verandert in vloeistof (water) door verhitting; water helpt bomen te groeien; hout dat brandt creëert vuur; en vuur produceert as (aarde). Zo blijft de cyclus voortgaan. Zelf was ik vooral ge nteresseerd in de cyclus van emoties: Meditatie - Verdriet - Angst - Boosheid - Vreugde - (Meditatie) enz. De gedachte aan dit cyclische principe leverde een reis door een muzikale wereld van emoties op. Evolution bestaat uit vijf delen die betrekking hebben op de emotionele cyclus. Ik heb geprobeerd de muziek op natuurlijke wijze te laten ontstaan, met zo weinig mogelijk herhalingen. Elk deel vloeit voort uit de muzikale elementen uit het slot van het voorgaande deel. Het openingsmateriaal komt, in getransformeerde gedaante, terug aan het einde van het werk, waarmee de cyclus wordt afgerond. Evolution wurde von Kunstfactor für die vierte Abteilung der Holländischen Nationalen Brass-Band-Meisterschaft (NBK) 2011 in Auftrag gegeben. Die Widmung gilt Jappie Dijkstra und dem Musik-Informationszentrum (MUI) in Arnhem (Holland), in Anerkennung ihrer außerordentlichen Bemühungen um die Entwicklung des Brass-Band-Repertoires.Der Komponist über sein Werk:Die Idee zu diesem Stück kam mir beim Lesen eines Artikels über eine Richtung der chinesischen Philosophie, die abgekürzt Wu Xing heißt, was nicht wörtlich übersetzt werden kann, aber so viel wie fünf Elemente, fünf Phasen oder fünf Stadien der Verwandlung bedeutet. In diesem Zyklus enthält die Erde Metall, das sich bei Erhitzung verflüssigt (Wasser); Wasser lässt Bäume wachsen, deren Holz verbrennt (Feuer) und zu Asche wird (Erde), womit der Kreislauf von neuem beginnt.Mich interessierte besonders der Kreislauf von Gefühlen: Meditation - Trauer - Angst - Ärger - Freude - (Meditation) usw. Ich dachte mir, dass dieser Kreislauf eine wirkungsvolle emotionale Reise“ durch ein Musikstück darstellen könnte. Folglich besteht Evolution aus fünf gleichen Abschnitten, die diesen Kreislauf der Gefühle grob nachzeichnen. Ich habe versucht, die Musik organisch wachsen zu lassen mit möglichst wenig Wiederholungen. Jeder Satz entwickelt sich aus den Elementen vom Ende des vorhergehenden Satzes und das Material der Eröffnung vollendet am Schluss des Werkes den Kreis. Evolution se compose donc de cinq parties égales qui reflètent assez librement ce cycle des émotions. J’ai essayé de faire en sorte que la musique se développe de manière fluide et naturelle, avec un minimum de répétitions. Chaque mouvement s’ouvre partir des éléments musicaux qui parachèvent le mouvement précédent, tandis que le motif premier réapparaît.

Second to None is a perfectly suitable title for this work, though it actually refers to “Nulli Secundusâ€, the motto of the British Corps of Army Music, who gave the commission to Philip Sparke. The piece opens with a fanfare, followed by two short quotes from two of the Corp’s own marches and a festive Vivace. A more legato central section creates a nice contrast before the work closes with the opening fanfare. A perfect affair! De titel Second to None past heel goed bij dit werk, maar verwijst eigenlijk naar ‘Nulli Secundus’, het motto van British Army Corps of Music, het orkest dat Philip Sparke de opdracht voor dit werk gaf. Second to None opent met een fanfare. Daarna volgen twee korte citaten uit twee van de eigen marsen van het orkest en een feestelijke Vivace. Een meer legato deel creëert een mooi contrast voordat het werk wordt afgesloten met de openingsfanfare. The Spirit of Christmas is a medley of charming Christmas carols, all with an international character. The medley consists of the following five carols: Away in a Manger - The First Noel - It Came Upon the Midnight Clear - O Come, All Ye Faithful and Hark! The Herald Angels Sing. A four-part choir part in English has been added which can be used ad lib. or you can also opt for singing the melody line only, for example with a soloist and/or the congregation. There is a popular misconception that Stephen Collins Foster (1826—1864) found success as a song-writer writing many of his songs aiming to ‘humanise’ the black American slaves. He was a meticulous worker and sometimes spent months perfecting the lyrics of a song. His first success was Oh! Susanna (1848) and as his popularity grew he moved with his young family to New York to be near his publishers. This was not a success and Jane, his wife and Marion, his daughter, moved back to Pittsburgh in 1854. Foster wrote Jeanie with the Light Brown Hair as a result of her continued absence. Philip Sparke’s arrangement of this beautiful song will make an excellent slowinterlude in any concert.

There is a popular misconception that Stephen Collins Foster (1826—1864) found success as a song-writer writing many of his songs aiming to ‘humanise’ the black American slaves. He was a meticulous worker and sometimes spent months perfecting the lyrics of a song. His first success was Oh! Susanna (1848) and as his popularity grew he moved with his young family to New York to be near his publishers. This was not a success and Jane, his wife and Marion, his daughter, moved back to Pittsburgh in 1854. Foster wrote Jeanie with the Light Brown Hair as a result of her continued absence. Philip Sparke’s arrangement of this beautiful song will make an excellent slowinterlude in any concert.

Hava Nagila (the title means ‘let us rejoice’) is perhaps the best known example of a style of Jewish music called ‘klezmer’. Klezmer music originated in the ‘shtetl’ (villages) and the ghettos of Eastern Europe, where itinerant Jewish troubadours, known as ‘klezmorim’, had performed at celebrations, particularly weddings, since the early Middle Ages.‘Klezmer’ is a Yiddish term combining the Hebrew words ‘kley’ (instrument) and ‘zemer’ (song) and the roots of the style are found in secular melodies, popular dances, Jewish ‘hazanut’ (cantorial music) and also the ‘nigunim’, the wordless melodies intoned by the ‘Hasidim’ (orthodox Jews).Since the 16th century, lyrics hadbeen added to klezmer music, due to the ‘badkhn’ (the master of ceremony at weddings), to the ‘Purimshpil’ (the play of Esther at Purim) and to traditions of the Yiddish theatre, but the term gradually became synonymous with instrumental music, particularly featuring the violin and clarinet. The melody of Hava Nagila was adapted from a folk dance from the Romanian district of Bucovina. The commonly used text is taken from Psalm 118 of the Hebrew bible. Das Werk zeichnet eindrucksvolle Bilder der schottischen Highlands und stellt dabei nacheinander Euphonium, Sopran-Cornet, Cornet, Flugelhorn, Es-Horn und Bariton ins Rampenlicht.
