This popular piece for solo violin and piano has been skillfully arranged by string pedagogue Doris Gazda. A standard piece in the repertoire, it adapts quite well to the string orchestra. This is an excellent piece for an advancing group.A rondo is a musical form that was commonly used by composers from the classical through the romantic music periods. It was often the form used for the last movement of a sonata, a symphony, a concerto or a piece of chamber music. The rondo form consists of a main theme (part A) that recurs with contrasting sections (parts B, C, D and so on) in between. The contrasting sections can change key and can change from major to minor tonality. A typical form of a rondo might be ABACADABA. It is usually written in triple meter, and is lively and joyful in character. Beethoven used the rondo form quite often, and Fritz Kreisler, the famous violinist and composer, found a Beethoven melody and turned it into this “little rondo,†or rondino, written originally for violin and piano. This arrangement for string orchestra can also be played by a small string ensemble. It should be played with a light style of bowing so as to give it a happy, lilting quality.

Festival March is presented in a new edition arranged by Richard Summers. It is a tour de force composition for advanced bands and hearkens back to a bygone era during the golden age of the band movement. Directors and students will hear operatic music from composer Victor Herbert who is best known for his Christmas classic, Toyland. This is a richly scored masterpiece that deserves to return to standard status in concert band repertoire. We are proud to bring you this new setting of this cherished classic.Festival March by Victor Herbert was written for the Pittsburgh Symphony and first performed under Herbert’s direction in Chicago on Dec. 9, 1901 celebrating the 12th anniversary of Chicago’s Auditorium Theatre. Also known as the Auditorium Festival March, he included it many times for programs of a festival nature. The main theme Auld Lang Syne, a famous Scottish folk song, is incorporated many times along with brass fanfares, interludes and march melodies. This band arrangement is very similar to the original orchestral composition. The missing string parts, the addition of the saxophone section and other band instruments, editing of the superimposed triplets against sixteenth notes, to one or the other, and articulations suitable for the band, were major challenges. The style of early twentieth-century American music is captured here. This arrangement will give band musicians access to a fine piece of music that could only be appreciated by orchestra musicians up to now. Although suitable for many occasions, this piece is a great way to begin or end a December holiday concert.  Notes to the ConductorVictor Herbert’s music can be interpreted in a romantic style, which is the conductor’s responsibility to read in nuance and musicality. The beginning and other triple-tonguing sections of this piece have a March of the Toys quality to it.  The interludes and Auld Lang Syne sections are legato and musical. The March sections can also be shaped musically.About the ComposerVictor Herbert was born in Ireland in 1861 and raised in Germany. When he moved to America in 1886, he joined the Metropolitan Opera as principal cellist and eventually composed many works including forty-three operettas on Broadway from the 1890s to World War I, including Naughty Marietta and Babes in Toyland. Victor Herbert conducted the Pittsburgh Symphony from 1898 to 1904 and then was the conductor of his own Victor Herbert Orchestra. He formed ASCAP with a group of composers in 1914 and was the director until his death in 1924. Among his thirty-one compositions for orchestra, Festival March was a favorite of his and was eventually published by Carl Fischer Music.  .

If the 2nd flute has no low B-natural, C-natural be played instead. (3rd movement measure 235 page 91) The part for the bass clarinet is written entirely in the treble clef a major ninth above the actual pitch. Horn parts written in the bass clef sound a fourth higher, never a fifth lower. If the special percussion instruments are not availalbe, the following substitutions may be made: The E-natural for the antique cymbals may be played on a glockenspiel (not the celesta); and The Bb for the small timpano on a side drum with snares silenced, struck with a soft felt stick. Several contrabasses must be provided with means for producing the extra low tones.

Composer/arranger Sean O'Loughlin has provided a refreshing new setting of our National Anthem. It was originally written for orchestral brass and percussion and has been performed at both MLB and NBA events. The arrangement begins with a bold fanfare to set the tone, but also to provide the motive glue to hold the arrangement together and create something unique. Creative harmonic usage and colorful orchestration really make this version stand out from the rest. There have been many great arrangements of our National Anthem throughout the years . The responsibility of creating one that truly brought something new to the mix was very daunting . I was fortunate enough to get an opportunity to write this version for the Oregon Symphony Brass Section to perform at the Portland Trail Blazers NBA games . Subsequent performances have occurred with the Baltimore Symphony at the Baltimore Orioles MLB games . At this time, it is my supreme honor to adapt this for the advanced concert band .In bringing something new, I decided to start with a bold fanfare to set the tone for this great music . Introducing some more dissonant harmonies also created a more intense feel .The first stanza includes a flowing counter line in the horns and alto saxophones . The trumpets interject some flourishes on the second pass to further the intensity . These flourishes continue “ . . . when the rockets red glare!†The final push at m . 29 is colored with pulsating 16th notes in the woodwinds that lead to some dramatic harmony at the fermata in m . 32 . The opening fanfare then returns to let everyone know that it's time to “Play ball!â€.

Composed by the Czech composer Bohuslav Martinu in 1927, The Kitchen Revue is a ballet initially created for a sextet. This score was reviewed and tailored for an orchestra. This ballet, talking about the life of kitchen utensils, is divided in ten sections: 1. Prologue (Allegretto) 2. Introduction (Tempo de marche) 3. Danse du moulinet autour du caudron (Poco meno) 4. Danse du chaudron et du couvercle (Allegro) 5. Tango (Danse d'amour. Lento) 6. Duel (Poco a poco allegro. Tempo di Charleston) 7. Entracte (Lamentation du chaudron. Allegro moderato) 8. Marche funebre (Adagio) 9. Danse radieuse (Tempo di marche) 10. Fin du drame (Allegretto) The story focuses on the marriage of the Pot and Lid which is put at risk by the Twirling Stick, and the music features some strong jazz influences. Bohuslav Martinu (1890-1959) also wrote 13 other ballets, 15 operas and 6 symphonies and some orchestral and chamber music.

Son et lumière (“sound and light,†a kind of show staged for tourists at historic sites or famous buildings) is an orchestral entertainment whose subject is the play of colors, bright surfaces, and shimmery textures. I have tried in this music to recapture the élan and immediacy that regular meters and repetitive rhythms make possible—something forbidden during the modernist regime but recently restored in the post-modern work of composers like John Adams, Steve Reich, and others. Throughout its brief nine-minute span, then, the piece is built almost exclusively of short, busy ostinato figures—my attempt, I suppose, to achieve the rhythmic vitality of minimalism, but without giving in to the over-simple harmonic language that usually comes with it.Surprisingly, the musical materials seemed determined to shape themselves into an approximation of nineteenth-century sonata form. We hear an introduction, a first theme (based on triadic broken chords), a second theme (beginning with the flute solo), and a closing theme (led by two piccolos). In a sort of development section, these materials are recombined in new ways; in a recapitulation, both the first and second themes are recalled more or less intact (part of the second is actually repeated quite literally). Then, in the coda, a second surprise: as if another, different music has been lurking all the while behind the shiny surface, the strings now unexpectedly split off from the rest of the orchestra to assert a new, more passionate, more “serious†voice, transcending the external show of sound and light.Son et lumière, commissioned by the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, was composed between June and December 1988 in Ithaca (N.Y.), in Los Angeles, and at the artists’ colony Yaddo, in Saratoga Springs (N.Y.). David Zinman conducted the first performance in Baltimore on 18 May 1989; André Previn gave the West Coast premiere with the Los Angeles Philharmonic on 18 January, 1990.Son et lumière (“sound and light,†a kind of show staged for tourists at historic sites or famous buildings) is an orchestral entertainment whose subject is the play of colors, bright surfaces, and shimmery textures. Non-liturgical setting of the Kyrie, Sanctus and Agnus Dei from the Latin Mass, scored for 4-part children's choir and full orchestra. The composer states that each movement is reasonably substantial, with much space for the orchestral music to grow and develop [...] a lot of the vocal writing was imagined as an extension and enhancement of the orchestral palette where the young voicesare 'smudged' into the orchestral sound in an impressionistic manner. Little Mass (2014) was commissioned by the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Society for its 175th Anniversary, the Royal Scottish National Orchestra and the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra. Supported by Sally, Mary and Jonathan Groves to mark the centenary of SirCharles Groves, in the month he would have celebrated his 100th birthday. Suitable for intermediate standard voices and advanced standard orchestra.

Carter Pann’s Richard and Renée was written as a gift for two musician friends of his, Renée Kershaw and Dick Floyd. The first movement, “Renée’s Reply,†is a musical portrait of the time the composer spent with his friend in Italy. According to Pann, “the music strives for a poignancy inspired by this new event in their relationship accompanied by a backdrop so beautiful it defies words. A writer/composer (anyone, for that matter) cannot live on the Amalfi Coast and remain unchanged, unmarked.†The second movement, “Floyd’s Fantastic Five-Alarm Foxy Frolic,†is in a playful ragtime style, with an ending that the composer describes as “over the top.†Duration: 13’.

The “cat and mouse chase” has been a part of folklore and popular culture since the time of pharaohs in ancient Egypt. Over the ages, the chase has served as a metaphor for the suspenseful and sometimes alternating relation between hunter and hunted. In the modern age, the story has been played out hundreds of times in popular animated cartoons, often accompanied by a musical score representing the energetic spirit of the chase with lively twists and turns, sudden surprises and tongue-in-cheek music. In this spirit of playfulness and suspense, Robert Spittal has created a marvelous work that is both entertaining and exhilarating. Franz Joseph Haydn's famous melody from the second movement of his “Emperor Quartet†(String Quartet, Op. 76) was the basis for the national anthem of Austria for more than a century and is frequently heard in hymns, anthems and alma maters worldwide. In this celebratory extended fanfare, composer James Curnow skillfully weaves this majestic melody into a work which is both exuberant and energetic. Recorded by the Cobb Wind Symphony (Marietta, GA) – Alfred Watkins and Robert Cowles conductors, premiered during their performance at the Midwest Clinic, December 2018. Dur: 4:25.

Written for the late Robert Shaw and the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra in 1983, Desert Forests is one of the most successful of Brant's spatial works for conventional-sized symphony orchestra. The score mandates that the higher woodwinds (piccolos, flutes, oboes, clarinets) be stationed in a balcony at the back of the hall and the trumpets and trombones in boxes or balconies on opposite sides of the hall. There is also an optional improvised piano-obbligato. A recommended seating diagram for the stage instruments (also unusually arranged) is included in the score and was used to great effect in the performances conducted by Kurt Masur with the New York Philharmonic in May 1994. This extraordinary work expands the idea of bitonality and spatiality as a structural device to create a fifteen minute exercise in ecstatic polyphony, inspired, according to the composer by a visit to a forest of saguro cactus in Saguro National Monument, near Tucson, Arizona. Complete performance materials are available on rental.
