MARS (135X180) inches. English-German-French-Dutch.
In 1950, Pope Pius XII selected Marche Pontificale from the OrganSymphony No. 1, by French composer Charles Gounod, as the officialhymn of the Vatican. The first rendition of the official hymn took placein the same year, in Saint Peter?s Square in Rome, played by sevenmilitary bands. To celebrate the 80th birthday of Pope Benedict XVI in2007, Wil van der Beek has produced a first-class arrangement of thisfamous work for concert band.

Marche fatale is an incautiously daring escapade that may annoy the fans of my compositions more than my earlier works, many of which have prevailed only after scandals at their world premieres. My Marche fatale has, though, little stylistically to do with my previous compositional path; it presents itself without restraint, if not as a regression, then still as a recourse to those empty phrases to which modern civilization still clings in its daily utility music, whereas music in the 20th and 21st centuries has long since advanced to new, unfamiliar soundscapes and expressive possibilities. The key term is banality. As creators we despise it, we try to avoid it - though we are not safe from the cheap banal even within new aesthetic achievements. Many composers have incidentally accepted the banal. Mozart wrote Ein musikalischer Spass [A Musical Jape], a deliberately amateurishly miscarried sextet. Beethoven's Bagatellen op. 119 were rejected by the publisher on the grounds that few will believe that this minor work is by the famous Beethoven. Mauricio Kagel wrote, tongue in cheek, so to speak, Marsche, um den Sieg zu verfehlen [Marches for being Unvictorious], Ligeti wrote Hungarian Rock; in his Circus Polka Stravinsky quoted and distorted the famous, all too popular Schubert military march, composed at the time for piano duet. I myself do not know, though, whether I ought to rank my Marche fatale alongside these examples: I accept the humor in daily life, the more so as this daily life for some of us is not otherwise to be borne. In music, I mistrust it, considering myself all the closer to the profounder idea of cheerfulness having little to do with humor. However: Isn't a march with its compelling claim to a collectively martial or festive mood absurd, a priori? Is it even music at all? Can one march and at the same time listen? Eventually, I resolved to take the absurd seriously - perhaps bitterly seriously - as a debunking emblem of our civilization that is standing on the brink. The way - seemingly unstoppable - into the black hole of all debilitating demons: that can become serene. My old request of myself and my music-creating surroundings is to write a non-music, whence the familiar concept of music is repeatedly re-defined anew and differently, so that derailed here - perhaps? - in a treacherous way, the concert hall becomes the place of mind-opening adventures instead of a refuge in illusory security. How could that happen? The rest is - thinking.(Helmut Lachenmann, 2017)CD (Version for Piano):Nicolas Hodges CD Wergo WER 7393 2 Bibliography:Ich bin nicht ,,pietistisch verformt. This lively march comes to us from one of Holst's most popular works, the First Suite in E flat for Military Band written in 1909. Two contrasting themes-a crisp, marcato in D and a lyrical, legato theme in G-thrill listeners. The powerful finale of the march, back in D, uses both melodies layered on top of one another. The lyrical section features the cellos and violas and all parts are interesting.

An exceptionally clever idea, to combine the standard bugle calls into an easy march for beginning students. It is something they already know, and can be successful on right away. We are delighted to welcome composer/educator Chris Ferguson to the Carl Fischer catalog. He brings a wealth of experience working with beginners that has translated into this wonderful new march for young students.Reveille March is inspired by the bugle calls found throughout military history. The “Reveille†call is the signal used to awaken the troops for morning roll call and accompanies the raising of the flag. At the conductor’s discretion, the soli sections (measures 29 and 37) may also be performed as solos in reference to the traditional solo bugle call.“To the Color†(measure 49) is used to signal the end of a soldier’s day. It is also used when a full band is not available to render honors and commands all the same courtesies as our National Anthem.

Gottfried Sonntag, a in military musician in Bayreuth, created a (concert) march from some of the central musical motifs of the 'Ring'. In those days this was a frequent way of making music from stage works more accessible to a wider public or of exploiting its popularity. Moreover, Richard Wagner expressed his approval of arrangements of his works for wind band.(1 Piccolo-Flote ad lib., 1 Flote, 2 Oboen ad lib., 2 Fagotte ad lib., 1 Klarinette in Es ad lib., 3 Klarinetten in B, 2 Alt-Saxophone in Es ad lib., 1 Tenor-Saxophon in B ad lib., 1 Bariton-Saxophon in Es ad lib., 4 Horner in F oder in Es, 4 Trompeten in B (3. und 4. ad lib.), 3 Posaunen, 2 Flugelhorner in B, 3 Tenorhorner in B, 1 Bariton, 2 Tuben, Schlagzeug: Glockenspiel ad lib., kleine Trommel, grosse Trommel, Becken).

Haydn arrived in London at the beginning of February 1794 for his second stay in England. Two movements of the Symphony in G major Hob. I:100 had already been completed by then, and the finished work was premiered on 31 March. The trumpet fanfare in the second movement and the use of “janissary†percussion gave the symphony its nickname “Military Symphony,†which Haydn himself even used. Its success in London was enormous; in 1794/95 alone, the work was performed nine times and thus quickly became one of the most popular Haydn symphonies of all time. To everyone wishing to become more acquainted with this symphony, let this inexpensive study edition be commended - with reliable commentaries on its genesis, sources, and edition as well as an unassailable musical text taken from the Haydn Complete Edition.
