Bryce Dessner's Lachrimae was commissioned by the Amsterdam Sinfonietta, the Scottish Ensemble, and the Norwegian Chamber Orchestra. Composer's Note: Lachrimae is a direct reference to John Dowland's work of the same name. I had played that that piece in school on guitar and decided that I wanted to base something on it. Dowland himself adapted the piece several times into different versions and there's also a Benjamin Britten composition based on the same piece of music, so that was part of my inspiration. When I wrote my work I waslistening to string orchestra music and I think Bartok's Divertimento is the pinnacle of string writing. So the piece is kind of equally inspired by Dowland's Rennaissance Lachrimae and by Bartok's Divertimento.

The smoldering remains of a fire flicker back to life in Ember Dance. This piece seeks to create a musical expression of the glowing ashes and sparks that dance through the night air around a fire. This is accomplished with edgy rhythms and snap (Bartok) pizzicato effects. Exaggerated dynamics and precise articulations will give Ember Dance energy and interest, allowing all members of the orchestra to sparkle!

The tragic circumstances surrounding the origin of the concerto are well known: Manon Gropius, the daughter of Berg's friend Alma Mahler, died of polio after the composer had written the first sketches to his violin concerto. In remembrance of her, he dedicated the work to the memory of an angel. Later, Berg decided to incorporate into the score the Bach chorale Es ist genug as a quote. He also worked on the solo part directly and intensely with the American violinist Louis Krasner, who had commissioned the work. Berg was no longer able to witness the first performance and the first edition of the concerto since he passed away in late 1935. This new edition is the first Urtext version of Berg's work, which was created in the midst of a spate of epoch-making violin concertos by Stravinsky (1931), Schoenberg (1936), Prokofiev (1937), Bartok (1938), Hindemith (1939) a. o. Errors from the first edition were corrected after an in-depth comparison with the autograph score, the short score and, in some cases, with the twelve-tone row structure. The entire performance material can be purchased; however, due to copyright reasons, the score and orchestral parts are not available the United States.Werden die Urtextausgaben von Breitkopf & Hartel aufgrund ihres hellblauen Umschlags augenzwinkernd die Himmlischen genannt, so ist dies in Bezug auf die neu vorgelegte Partitur Programm. Béla Bartók composed his Piano Quintet while at grammar school in Pozsony (Pressburg, now Bratislava), and it still shows the influence of Brahms in its melody and harmony. The work was always resoundingly successful at his youthful concerts. When on 7 January 1921 the Waldbauer Quartet wanted to repeat the programme of a concert given ten years previously, Bartók was displeased that this early work of his should be performed once again. Finally he consented to the performance, and played the piano part himself. The quintet was greeted with tumults of applause, unlike the other pieces on the programme, which were written later. According to a communication by Márta Ziegler,Bartók threw away the score in anger, and for many years it was believed to have been destroyed. In 1963, the editor Denijs Dille received a package inside which were the score and parts, which had been thought lost. Denijs Dille wrote: 'In preparing the text of this edition for practical purposes, I used the autograph score, and Bartók's own handwritten parts for the first and second violins, viola, and cello. [...] Bartók made so many deletions and significant changes in the score that the resulting version was somewhat different from the original. In this edition we give the last version, supplemented with the minor changes and signs that can be found in the string parts.'.
