Trumpet parts in both B flat and E flat simplified piano part and a free CD including piano backing tracks and orchestral performance extracts.Johann Nepomuk Hummel (1778-1837) composed this concerto in 1803 for the keyed trumpet which had been developed by Anton Weidinger (1767-1852). Weidinger gave its first performance on New Year's Day 1804. Originally composed in the key of E it is more commonly played in Eb. The keyed trumpet was the first type of trumpet which could play chromatically but the invention was not a huge success: it suffered from a poor quality of sound. In the early 19th century the invention of the valve rendered the keyed trumpetobsolete.This edition is intended to be more user-friendly than the others currently available: there is a much easier (and dare I say more stylistic) piano accompaniment - any doubling of the solo part has been removed voicing simplified and my premise has been to imagine what it might have been before it was orchestrated rather than trying to cram in every last piece of orchestral detail.Suggested cuts in the piano part have been indicated giving a short introduction to each movement perfect for auditions recitals or exams. However the bar numbers still tally with the longer original versions which are included should they be required. The dynamics and articulation which I have added incorporate the weight of opinion in current editions and recordings offering more guidance than 'scholarly' editions without being overprescriptive.There is an appendix with suggested interpretation of trills and ornaments. Listening to as many different recordings as possible is the best way to assimilate good trills.The accompanying CD provides piano accompaniments and observes the suggested cuts. Armenian composer and pianist Alexandre Aroutiounian (1920-2012) was awarded many prizes for his compositions throughout his career. His Aria and Scherzo for Trumpet and Piano is little-known yet it is a sublime addition to the modern repertoire. Aroutiounian's works have been performed all over the world and he is particularly remembered for his Trumpet Concerto. Melodic and rhythmic characteristics of Armenian music are prominent in Aroutiounian's works further expressing his nationality by use of ashughner (folk minstrel) improvisations. Aria and Scherzo is made up of twomovements the Aria marked as adagio and the Scherzo as allegretto. Tonality is exploited throughout and contains unique uses of rhythm and ensemble. Aroutiounian's Aria and Scherzo is an exciting piece for all advanced trumpeters.

To this day Eugène Bozza (1905-1991) remains one of the most prolific composers for wind instruments despite being a violinist himself. His Caprice No. 2 for Trumpet with Piano accompaniment is no exception to the composer's success. During his studies at the Paris Conservatoire Bozza won prizes for Violin conducting and composition as well as the Grand Prix de Rome. He then conducted the orchestra of the Opéra-Comique and became Head of the Conservatoire in Valenciennes whilst remaining a prominent composer. Composed in 1978 Bozza's Caprice No. 2 addresses advanced aspects of theTrumpet including complex rhythms exploited tonalilty and articulation. As music educationalist Paul Griffiths has written of Bozza's compositions 'his works reveal melodic fluency elegance of structure and a consistenly sensitive concern of instrumental capabilities.'

Successful French composer Pierre Gabaye (1930-2000) studied at the Paris Conservatoire where he won the 1956 Prix de Rome. His competence is proven by his Boutade for Trumpet and Piano. Gabaye's compositional style has been described as following the French neo-classical tradition such as the music of Poulenc. Boutade exemplifies the composer's light-hearted music. A typical performance of the work lasts about two and a half minutes. For all advanced trumpeters seeking chirpy lively and upbeat repertoire Gabaye's Boutade is ideal.

Concerto Solo no. 1-French composer pianist and teacher Paul Rougnon (1846-1934) studied at the Paris Conservatoire under many prolific musicians of the time including César Franck. Rougnon's composition catalogue is extensive with many works remaining popular to this day including his First Concert Solo for Trumpet or Cornet and Piano. The date of composition is unknown however Rougnon's First Concert Solo displays characteristics of early French romantic music such as chromaticism flourishing semiquaver passages complex rhythms and extensive use of performance directions. For all advanced aspiring Trumpetand Cornet players Rougnon provides an alternative exciting performance work.

Bohuslav Martinu (1890-1959) was a prolific Czech composer writing many large scale works. The composer moved to Paris in 1923 where he began experimenting in a variety of composition styles. Sonatine for Trumpet and Piano was composed in 1957 and is adaptable to both the B flat and C Trumpet. Martinu himself was a violinist but he liked to experiment and the mid-1950s saw him move to Nice in France where he began writing Sonatas for wind and brass. Sonatine for Trumpet exemplifies the composer's influence of Stravinsky Debussy and jazz music. The piece is excitingly virtuosic in its use of flutter tonguing complex rhythms chromaticism and ensemble between the Trumpet and Piano. As a varied substantial work for the Trumpet repertoire Martinu's Sonatine is essential to the advanced trumpeter.
