Maria durch ein? Dornwald ging (Blest Mary Wanders Through the Thorn) is a traditional German Christmas song. The earliest known version is recorded in the Andernacher Gesangbuch from 1608. Halfway through the nineteenth century it was a regional pilgrimage song in Thüringen, and at the beginning of the twentieth century, the current version was registered in the songbook Zupfgeigenhansl of the German youth movement. Michael Bilkes used the well-known melody to create this attractive arrangement for concert band.Maria durch ein’ Dornwald ging (Maria door een doornwoud trad) is een traditioneel Duits kerstlied. In 2008, composer Philip Sparke published the latest volume of his instrumental books, Super Solos. Young German flautist Meinhard Drescher was so taken with these solos that his father secretly commissioned the composer toarrange three of the solos (Little Overture, Berceuse and Moto Perpetuo) into a mini-concerto for flute and concert band, which was presented to Meinhard as a 16th birthday present. American Indian songs and poems, which includes a song that translates as Arrows of Lightning, served as the inspiration for this composition.In this song, the arrows were charmed by means of singing and dancing so that they would go faster - as fast as lightning.
