The work was commissioned by the Britten Sinfonia and firstperformed by them with soloist Nicholas Daniel on 6th November 2006 at the Queen Elizabeth Hall London. This is the Solo Oboe part. In the composer's note Tavener explains his high regard forMozart and how in Kaleidoscopes he attempts to take Mozart's music and meditate upon it in four main cycles. He states that all the music has its source in Mozart whether it be rhythmic harmonic orcontrapuntal.

Par DUFOURT HUGUES. Le titre choisi pour cette oeuvre est tiré de Vents (1945), le second recueil de poèmes américains de Saint-John Perse. Paul Claudel, qui publia en 1949 une mémorable analyse de Vents, décrit ce poème comme une épopée primordiale dont le thème est la 'poussée en avant'. Incontestablement, ce poème de l'ébranlement, de l'élan créateur, dessine en filigrane la physionomie spirituelle de l'Amérique, où se mêlent de manière inextricable démesure, violence, mélancolie, exil et arrachement. Mais ce que nous disent essentiellement le vent d'Ouest et l'embrasement du Couchant exprime une aspiration à l'ouverture, à des horizons nouveaux, immenses, entremêlés et partagés. Vents est une invocation à la route, à la quête errante, à la course éternelle. Perse est un poète de la civilisation, un artisan de l'histoire universelle, non le chantre ou l'apologiste de l'hémisphère occidental. Il rejoint Varèse sur ce point.
'au plus haut faîte de l'instant': moment de la résurgence du monde. Moment tragique et sublime de l'abolition des formes et de l'émergence d'une nouvelle matrice. L'homme est porté de plus en plus haut par 'ce même mouvement de grandes houles en croissance' qui menace sans cesse de l'engloutir. La poésie de Perse se refuse à la fragmentation, dans laquelle il voit l'expression des formes modernes de la vie aliénée.
La continuité, dans le domaine même de la poésie, est un enjeu et un combat. Le vent symbolise et illustre ce puissant courant de sensibilité issu des profondeurs. Il en va de même en musique. Les ressources de la forme, les effets de forme sont aujourd'hui épuisés et ne donnent plus lieu qu'aux manifestations d'un rationalisme étroit, provincial et ratiocinant. L'informatique retarde ce phénomène officiel de sclérose mais ne le guérit pas. Le style spasmodique et la syntaxe fragmentaire de la musique d'avant-garde de ces cinquante dernières années ont vécu.
Ce Concerto pour Hautbois et Grand Orchestre ne retient rien des formes du passé, même récent. On y rencontre un échange permanent entre l'homme et les éléments. L'orchestre est converti en un très grand vent, en une houle perpétuelle, voire une forêt tropicale. Le soliste est invité à se frayer son chemin au sein du tumulte des puissances élémentaires. Ce parcours incertain est à l'image des conditions de vie de notre époque, dont l'issue est le plus souvent fatale et dont le caractère 'épique' ignore le devoir de mémoire et la geste des héros.
Ce Concerto est une commande de l'Orchestre Symphonique National de la RAI. Ecrite pour Francesco et Emilio Pomárico, qui en assurent la création, cette oeuvre leur est dédiée.
