In his own distinctive style, Robert van Beringen has composed a very unique fantasy on three themes by the famous Baroque composers Johann Sebastian Bach and George Friedrich Händel. Van Beringen used Bach’s chorale Brich an, o schönes Morgenlicht (‘Break forth, O Beauteous Heavenly Light’) from his Christmas Oratorio and the recitative Behold, a Virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Emmanuel, God with Us from Händel’s Messiah. A perfect way to say Merry Christmas in music!

In seinem eigenen unverwechselbaren Stil schuf Robert van Beringen diese Fantasie über drei Themen der berühmten Barockkomponisten Johan Sebastian Bach und Johann Friedrich Händel: Den Choral Brich an, o schönes Morgenlicht nahm er aus Bachs Weihnachtsoratorium; aus Händels Messias stammen die beiden anderen Themen: das Rezitativ Denn sieh, eine Jungfrau wird schwanger und der Hallelujah Chorus.

Dans cette fantaisie de Noël, Robert van Beringen conjugue avec une inégalable facilité des thèmes des maîtres du baroque, Jean-Sébastien Bach et Georg Friedrich Haendel. Le choral Brich an, o schönes Morgenlicht, n° 12 est extrait de la deuxième partie de l’Oratorio de Noëlde Jean-Sébastien Bach, tandis que le récitatif « Voici qu’une vierge concevra et enfantera un fils, et lui donnera le nom d’Emmanuel, Dieu avec nous » et le Chœur de l’Alléluia sont extraits du Messie de Georg Friedrich Haendel.

Galea et Bellum was commissioned by the Excelsior Schraard music society (Friesland, the Netherlands). The work tells the story of a rare helmet that was discovered in a church in the Frisian village of Schettens in 2015. Research revealed that it had been the property of Skelte van Aysma, a Frisian officer who fought in the armies of the Princes of Orange Maurice and Frederick Henry during the Eighty Years’ War. This little piece of history was the starting point for this composition. As a leitmotif, the hymn ‘Ach wie flüchtig, ach wie nichtig ist der Menschen Leben’ (‘Ah, how fleeting, ah how insignificant’) has been used. This 17th century melody by Michel Franck, inan arrangement by Johann Sebastian Bach, initially appears only in fragments, but grows to full stature toward the end of the work. An ideal contest piece with lots of challenges for your band.

Galea et Bellum is geschreven in opdracht van muziekvereniging Excelsior Schraard. Het werk verhaalt over een zeldzame helm die in 2015 werd ontdekt in een kerk in het Friese dorpje Schettens. Dit stukje geschiedenis is het uitgangspunt geweest voor deze compositie. Als leidmotief wordt het lied ‘Ach wie flüchtig, ach wie nichtig ist der Menschen Leben’ gebruikt. Deze 17e-eeuwse melodie van Michel Franck, in een zetting van Johann Sebastian Bach, duikt eerst fragmentarisch op, maar komt tegen het einde van het werk tot volle wasdom. Een ideaal wedstrijdwerk met veel uitdaging voor uw orkest.

Das Werk erzählt die Geschichte eines seltenen Helms, der 2015 in einer Kirche in dem friesischen Dorf Schettens entdeckt wurde. Dieses kleine Stück Geschichte bildet den Ausgangspunkt für die Komposition. Als Leitmotiv wurde das Kirchenlied Ach wie flüchtig, ach wie nichtig“ verwendet. Diese Melodie aus dem 17. Jahrhundert von Michael Franck, in einer Bearbeitung von Johann Sebastian Bach, erscheint anfangs fragmentarisch, entwickelt sich dann aber zum Ende des Werkes hin zu seiner vollen Größe. Ein hervorragendes Wettbewerbsstück mit vielen Herausforderungenfür Ihr Orchester.

Galea et Bellum est une commande de la société de musique Excelsior Schraard (Frise, Pays-Bas). L’œuvre raconte l’histoire d’un casque rare qui a été découvert dans l’église du village frise Schettens en 2015. Des recherches menées ont révélé qu’il appartenait Skelte van Aysma, un officier frise qui s’était battu dans les armées des Princes d’Orange, Maurice et Frédéric-Henri, pendant la guerre de Quatre-Vingts Ans. Ce petit bout d’histoire fut le point de départ de cette composition. L’hymne « Ach wie flüchtig, ach wie nichtig ist der Menschen Leben » (« Ah ! combien fugitive, ah! combien vaine est la vie de l’homme ») y figure comme leitmotiv. Cettemélodie du XVIIe siècle de Michel Franck, dans un arrangement de Jean-Sébastien Bach, est présentée d’abord de manière fragmentée, mais grandit jusqu’ atteindre sa pleine stature vers la fin. The well-known chorale Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland (Let the Earth Now Praise the Lord) was written by Martin Luther in 1524 and derives from a translation of a hymn from the 4th century before Christ. The melody was composed by JohannWalter, however Johann Sebastian Bach used it as a basis for many cantatas. This arrangement by Jacob de Haan gives your band the chance to perform an attractive version of this beautiful chorale.

Het bekende koraal Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland is in 1524 geschreven door Maarten Luther - het betreft een vertaling van een hymne uit de 4e eeuw n.Chr. De melodie is gecomponeerd door Johann Walter. In het Nederlandse Liedboekvoor de Kerken is het koraal te vinden als gezang 122 (Kom tot ons, de wereld wacht). Johann Sebastian Bach gebruikte de melodie als basis voor verschillende cantates. Dit arrangement van Jacob de Haan geeft uw orkestde gelegenheid een fraaie versie ten gehore te brengen.

Die Melodie dieses bekannten Adventsliedes stammt aus dem 12. Jahrhundert, der Text von Martin Luther. Das Lied hat bereits große Komponisten, wie u. a. Johann Sebastian Bach, Michael Praetorius, Samuel Scheidt und Heinrich Schütz, zu Kantatenund Motetten inspiriert. Zur Adventszeit wird es innerhalb und außerhalb der Kirche gern gesungen - und kann dank dieser stimmungsvollen Bearbeitung nun auch Teil Ihres weihnachtlichen Repertoires werden.

Martin Luther (1483-1546) a réalisé en son temps la fusion entre chant sacré et chant traditionnel. L'une des plus anciennes attestations est l'hymne de saint Ambroise (vers 339-397), Veni redemptor gentium, traduit fin 1523par le Réformateur en cantique de l'Avent, Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland. Jean-Sébastien Bach s'en est inspiré pour composer plusieurs cantates. Cet arrangement de Jacob de Haan évolue dans la douceur et la lumiére de Noël.

Originally written for 3 vocal soloists, choir and orchestra Cantata No.79 is partially based on the well known hymn Now Thank We All Our God, the melody of which is attributed to Martin Rinckart. This arrangement for concert band by Robert van Beringen combines part of the first movement (Coro) with and ensemble from the third movement (Choral).

In 2007 is het zogenaamde Lutherdecennium begonnen, de tien jaar waarin wordt voorbereid op het jubileumjaar 2017. In dat jaar is het vijfhonderd geleden dat Luther zijn 95 stellingen publiceerde. Het jaar 2012 heeft ‘Muziek en Reformatie’als thema. Naast muziek van Luther zelf staan componisten als J. S. Bach en Heinrich Schütz in het middelpunt. Met deze bewerking van de melodie Nun danket alle Gott, die Bach als basis nam voor zijn cantateGott, der Herr, ist Sonn’ und Schild (BWV 79), kunt u in 2012 op gepaste wijze stilstaan bij ‘Muziek en Reformatie’.

Seit 2007 läuft die so genannte Luther-Dekade“, eine Veranstaltungsreihe, die auf das Reformationsjubiläum 2017 vorbereitet. Das Jahr 2012 ist innerhalb dieser Dekade dem Thema Musik und Reformation“ gewidmet. Neben Musik von Luther selbst, stehen da Komponisten wie J. S. Bach oder Heinrich Schütz im Mittelpunkt. Mit dieser Bearbeitung der Melodie von Nun danket alle Gott, die Bach als Grundlage seiner Kantate Gott, der Herr, ist Sonn’ und Schild (BWV 79) verwendete, im Repertoire, können Sie Ihren Beitrag zum Jahr Musik und Reformation“ leisten.

L’arrangement réalisé par Robert van Beringen intègre une partie du premier mouvement (Coro) et l’ensemble du troisième mouvement (Choral) de la cantate. Choral from Cantata N° 79 est une pièce instrumentale mais peut également être interprétée avec un choeur mixte. Les parties pour choeur (en allemand) sont disponibles séparément.
