The first movement, 'Ljud stort, ljud' (Sound big, sound), was commissioned in 2008 to celebrate the centenary of Svenska kulturfonden. 'Som det stilla vi söker' (Like the tranquillity we seek) and 'Slå våg, slå' (Crash wave, crash) were commissioned in the same year by the Bergen International Festival. The premiere performers will be (as of 241108: were) Scott Anderson clarinet Ignace Jang violin Mark Votapek cello and Robert Pollock piano.The title is borrowed from the first line of American poet Walt Whitman’s magnificent poem SEADRIFT a tribute to the sea. The poem forms part of Whitman’s magnum opus LEAVES OF GRASS which he revised extended and worked on practically all his writing life.I had previously drawn some lines from the poem SEADRIFT for another work of mine a work likewise entitled SEADRIFT (1978) for soprano and ensemble.In this present new piece I did not set out to depict in music ‘the soul of the sea’ or anything like that. I did however have an intention of making the piece a sort of outstretched hand from one small country with a multitude of islands and – necessarily – a lot of water around it (I am referring of course to my native Denmark) to another country with many islands: Hawaii with its far-away exotic appeal (at least for a Scandinavian) and its remoteness thousands and thousands of nautical miles away. Folkloristic Hawaiian chant (alluring samples of which were kindly forwarded to me from the commissioner of the work) fascinated and impressed me so much that my melodic repertoire in the new piece sometimes echo a Hawaiian Melodybrother.A latent wave-character is characteristic of the piece. You will hear a simultaneity of different ‘wavelengths’ and often a dense and complex melodic and rhythmic

This 15-minute work composed in 1989 was commissioned and premiered by the Aeolian Chamber Players. The quartet is a set of variations based on two melodies: Les Niaisde Sologne by Rameau and a fragment from Rodriguez's first opera Le Diable Amoureux hence the composite title Les Niais Amoureux.

Trio in d minor op. 3-Alexander Zemlinsky is mainly known for his operas and orchestral songs with their opulent late Romantic orchestration. His earlier inspired hit the Trio For Clarinet Op. 3 written in 1896 owes agreat deal to Zemlinsky’s first important role model Johannes Brahms as far as inflection and instrumentation are concerned. It was also Brahms who following its first performance in Vienna enthusiastically recommendedthe trio to his publisher Simrock.As the autograph has disappeared Henle’s edition follows the musical text in the first edition. It underwent careful examination and was cleared of numerous partly blatant engraver’serrors. Alongside the Piano score Henle’s edition comprises a part for Clarinet in Bb/A and an authentic alternative part for Violin as well as a Cello part.

The title has a double reference: to the ’inner voices’ of the mind expressing our (hardly conscious) impulses feelings dreams and to the ’inner voices’ of the music in the sense of internal parts and relations. Thus the title points to the obscure reflections of the ones in the others. During the piece there is a gradual transformation of the internal parts such as interval patterns sonorities and dynamics - running alongside the easily perceptible expansion of register. The music is so to say ’turned inside out’.

Trio (Op. 10) was composed c.1940 and first published in 1943. It is scored for Clarinet Cello and Piano. One of Frankel’s earliest works it is light and pleasing showing how the composer was first influenced by jazz and classical chamber music before he later turned to larger symphonic works and started experimenting with serialism. Benjamin Frankel (1906-1973) was a British composer and musician. He is best remembered for writing over one hundred film and television scores including The Man In The White Suit and The Battle Of The Bulge but he also wrote eight symphonies and many smaller works such as his ViolinSonata and Concerto which were written for Max Rostal.

Music for Clarinet in Bb, Cello and Piano. Par JOST CHRISTIAN. In this trio, as in most of his compositions, Jost has pictures and associations with true incidents, films and novels in his mind. What inspired him to write this piece was Joseph Conrad's novel 'Heart of Darkness' in which the protagonist Marlow says about the city of Brussels: 'In a few hours I arrived in a city that always make me think of a whited sepulchre.' In 'Sepulchral City', a work commissioned to mark the tenth anniversary of the Jerusalem Chamber Music Festival, however, the title refers to Jerusalem, the city of white tombs. The topic of Jost's trio is a travel into the soul and living spirit of a city, with no physical movement being needed to find the heart of impenetrable darkness: It lies within the city walls. In this respect, 'Sepulchral City' equals a compositionally unfolded funeral bell. Even the animated middle section rather has insisting than progressive power.
