Bret Hesla was inspired to write an SATB choral setting of Pope Francisâs A Prayer for Our Earth, which speaks to the climate emergency and our call to respond as people of faith. Zach Busch further arranged the score and created the piano accompaniment. The text is set in six short movements which convey the character of each prayer petition. The movements can be sung as a whole, individually, or in pairings, and could be interspersed with spoken prayers, psalms, or other liturgical elements.

Commissioned by The Voices Foundation in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the ending of World War II, this most somber and dramatic piece uses texts from David Geraint Jones and William Shakespeare to chronicle the recollections and reflections of a soldier, which are not for the faint of heart. Thinking back on a more carefree past, the ââ¬Åspeakerââ¬Â assures his love that the future will again hold quiet and wonder. However, the price to be paid in between the past and the future is in blood and death. The soldier predicts poppies swaying over him as he lies freed of pain, yes, but also of passion. And he concludes, ââ¬ÅYour peace is bought with mine, if but the echo of your laughter reaches me in hell.ââ¬Â.

This mass setting was commissioned by the Friends of Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford and first performed on Ascension Sunday, 1994. Suitable for both church and concert use, the music is both lyrical and dramatic. The ââ¬ÅSanctusââ¬Â begins quietly, with divided sopranos trading off on a major second in a mysterious and meditative way. Parts add and build until the basses enter with a cantus firmus of sorts. The major second continues to figure prominently in the ensuing material. The movement ends with a simple melody repeated in unison (ââ¬ÅHosanna in excelsisââ¬Â) fading away into the distance. Duration 3:55.

Setting both English and German texts, Sure of the Sky, Sure of the Sun ââ¬â Des Himmels sicher, der Sonne sicher is a haunting and moving reflection on the futility of war.àThe 5-minute piece for SATB choir and brass was premiered at one of the UKââ¬â¢s three main World War I centenary commemoration events on August 4, 2014. It was launched by the London Symphony Chorus, Schleswig-Holstein Festival Chor and Coldstream Guards, at a twilight event attended by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Prince Harry, and a number of world leaders, all gathered together in the tiny woodland cemetery of St Symphorien near Mons, Belgium ââ¬â the resting place for the first and last British, and the last Commonwealth, soldiers to die on the Western Front. The texts are ââ¬ÅMay, 1915ââ¬Â by Charlotte Mew (1869-1928) and ââ¬ÅTo a Missing Friendââ¬Â by Goldfeld, a German Jewish soldier killed in action, the poem was discovered by Jewish military historian, Peter C Appelbaum. Arranged for SATB choir, two keyboards, strings, and optional harp, with soprano, tenor (optional) and baritone soloists, this fresh and unorthodox interpretation reflects on the words of the Latin Mass by juxtaposing them with poems in English. Like movement 2, also called ââ¬ÅRevelation,ââ¬Â this movement is a rapid, homophonic declamation of the Latin text set for SATB and accompaniment. The music is a dynamic crescendo from pianissimo to fortissimo, painting the text. Duration 1:18.

This mass setting was commissioned by the Friends of Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford and first performed on Ascension Sunday, 1994. Suitable for both church and concert use, the music is both lyrical and dramatic. The ââ¬ÅBenedictusââ¬Â is for SATB divisi and begins with a short 6/8 declamation, then moves into a section where the rhythmic idea is set in a sort of off-the-beat fashion, with all parts divisi playing against each other. A unison section with the off-the-beat motif follows. A majestic ââ¬ÅHosannaââ¬Â follows. The ââ¬ÅAgnus Deiââ¬Â is set in a rubato triple meter in a homophonic style with close chords (also divisi.) At the ââ¬Åmiserere,ââ¬Â the choir 1/choir 2 call and response motif from the ââ¬ÅGloriaââ¬Â returns. That same motif continues into the ââ¬Ådona nobis pacem,ââ¬Â as the movement (and the entire Mass) ends with a long decrescendo into a quiet call, ââ¬ÅPacem.ââ¬Â Duration 7:33.

Molly Ijames' arrangement of this newly written Christmas hymn frames the nativity story in a haunting narrative about the darkness of waiting and the coming of Christ's light. Each stanza explores different aspects and metaphors of the darkness/light themes, vividly brought to life by the musical text-painting of the setting. The text is from The Book of Common Prayer, the music is original. A melismatic chant-like opening builds steadily to a dramatic declamation of the text Therefore let us keep the feast. Then the chant line continues softly in the accompaniment as the final alleluias are sung. The organ accompaniment is quite sufficient but can be augmented with Brass Quintet. From Mass of the Resurrection (ECS 8325).

Arranged for SATB choir, two keyboards, strings, and optional harp, with soprano, tenor (optional) and baritone soloists, this fresh and unorthodox interpretation reflects on the words of the Latin Mass by juxtaposing them with poems in English. For soprano solo and SATB choir, this movement begins with the choir on the English text by Phineas Fletcher (1633). A 32-measure soprano solo follows, which covers the majority of the English text. The soloist then begins the ââ¬ÅRecordare,ââ¬Â a calm, descending melodic line with the choir singing the opening ââ¬ÅDrop, dropââ¬Â motif as accompaniment. The choir then concludes with the slow, descending lines ââ¬ÅJesu pie, Jesu pie.ââ¬Â Duration 4:04.
