Largely based on the A. C. Swinburne poem ââ¬ÅMusic: An Ode,ââ¬Â this piece celebrates the gift and meaning of music in our lives. Set in a flowing 6/8 for SATB with piano, the choral parts are easy but the piano part, although lovely and quite essential, is far from that.

Invictus: A Passion addresses one of the worldââ¬â¢s most powerful stories through the lens of the modern world. The texts, written or inspired by women, describe not only human suffering and persecution but also the human capacity for love and humility in the face of tyranny. Composer Howard Goodall is uniquely suited to bring these texts to life with music of emotional clarity and sweeping force. This excerpt is scored for SATB (divisi) choir and piano. A text by Ãâ melia Lanyer (née Bassano) (ââ¬ÅWhy should unlawful actions use the Light?ââ¬Â) is set as a homophonic chorale with a supportive accompaniment. Duration 3:32.

Written for the Enchanted Voices CD, this is one of many settings of texts either from the Beatitudes (or springing from them) available from this composer. For Solo and SS divisi, a cappella, the music has a light, ethereal feeling. ââ¬ÅBeatiââ¬Â can be taken as a sort of ââ¬ÅBlessed are theyââ¬Â prefix for the movements which are not direct quotes from the Beatitudes. This movement is a unison, chant-like setting of the Latin texts for Genesis 20:13 (ââ¬ÅThou shalt do me this kindnessââ¬Â¦Ã¢â¬Â) and Numbers 11:17 (ââ¬ÅAnd I will take of thy spiritââ¬Â). The soloist begins and sometimes takes over from the choral voices. Mostly unison except for about ten measures (out of the 69) in two-part texture and four measures in three parts. Duration 4:39

Set for SATB voices, a soprano or tenor soloist, and piano, Goodallââ¬â¢s original text is a promise of constancy from one person to another. Through many kinds of situations and circumstances it is assured that ââ¬ÅWeââ¬â¢ll walk together stride by stride.ââ¬Â The choral parts are homophonic and approachable, the piano part a bit challenging (there is one section which is essentially a beautiful piano solo with the chorus accompanying on a neutral syllable). An uplifting piece suitable for school, community, or professional choruses.

Midwinter Song is a Christmas carol that calls us to love, faith, and hope. With a beautiful and supportive piano accompaniment and accessible vocal lines, this work will appeal to a wide variety of levels. Susan Labarr's Midwinter Song is a new work for Advent or Christmas. Labarr opens the piece with a gentle piano solo that perfectly captures the mystery of the poetry—the words seem to travel out of a time in the deep past and give homage to the neglected art of both rhythm and rhyme. In particular, the description of the world gathering in amber halls in the first verse wonderfully conjures images of medieval casltes or mead halls lit only with firelight and candles, full with the sound of carols. This amazing work opens with the sounds of distant villages as their drumming echoes through the African rain forests (or school gymnasium). As the players return to their â??normalâ? seats in the band, the various elements of this composition gradually come together in a joyous unified celebration. Thoroughly researched to include authentic African patterns, Michael Sweeney has created a stunningly effective work that is playable by young ensembles. Includes performance and program notes on how to make your own percussion instruments and involve other departments in your school. Not just a piece of music...this is an event! (4:45).

With his arrangement of Drei Könige, originally composed for voices, Robert van Beringen makes a welcome contribution to the christmas repertoire for bands. In this work by the German composer Peter Cornelius (1824 - 1874) the mediaeval choral Wie schön leuchtet der Morgenstern comes to the fore as a counter melody.

Tochter Zion, also known as See the Conquering Hero Comes, is the most famous chorus from the oratorio Judas Maccabaeus (1746) by the composer George Frideric Handel (1685-1759). The heroic epic based on the Biblical story about commander-in-chief Judas Maccabaeus, was used by Handel to celebrate the English victory over the rebellious Scottish. The first performance of this patriotic work - written in the pleasing, rich baroque style that Handel’s music is known for - was conducted by himself; the success was huge. The chorus See the Conquering Hero Comes was added later, in 1748, drawn from another oratorio (Joshua).Tochter Zion, ook bekend als See the Conquering Hero Comes, is het beroemdste koor uit het oratorium Judas Maccabaeus (1746) van de componist Georg Friedrich Händel (1685-1759).

Johann Sebastian Bach schrieb viele wundervolle Choräle.

In 1725 J.S. Bach composed the cantata BWV79 Gott, der Herr, is Sonn' un Schild for the celebration of the Reformation. Originally written for three vocal soloists, choir, and orchestra, Cantata No. 79 is partially based on thewell-known hymn Now Thank We All Our God, the melody of which is attributed to Martin Rinckart. This arrangement for concert band by Robert van Beringen combines part of the first movement (Coro) with an ensemble from the thirdmovement (Choral).
