Following a recent experience on the jury of a guitar competition, I noted with great pleasure that Giorgio Mirto, with whom I had shared the role of juror, wanted to celebrate the experience of the competition - during from which we discovered that we had had a great affinity of thought - with something which could endure over time and not evaporate as often happens in short and occasional meetings between musicians. He did it as a true composer, which he is, and dedicated to me a very beautifully crafted Suite to which I allowed myself to collaborate at least formally, by suggesting titles for the four movements. This is how Suite n.1 was born, a piece that does not strictly respect the formal rules of the Baroque era, but reinterprets and reuses them in a new key. The work's obvious late Baroque inspiration led me to find titles that invited the performer to delve deeper into the work's aesthetic inspiration. So I suggested to Giorgio that he title the four movements with something that linked their content to four greats of the 18th century. German masters. The prelude has thus become from Eisenach because of its sometimes improvised Bach-like atmosphere, the second movement, vaguely toccata, speaks an organ language in the manner of Buxtehude (who lived in Lübeck), the slow movement has a Handelian quality - and Handel was born in Halle - and the last movement, far from being a true Chaconne, undoubtedly has the latter's taste for variation and ostinato, typical traits of Telemann who lived in Magdeburg. The cities that appear in the titles are therefore indelible to the authors cited. Furthermore, one should not think that the style of the work is in any way German, given that Giorgio Mirto expresses himself in a very joyful language that synthesizes modality with minimalism, all seasoned with a a nod to Pink's progressive rock Floyd. or a Mike Oldfield... The result of this mixture of ideas, inspirations and styles is a work that personally I never tire of reading and rereading, for the freshness that emanates from it and for the climate expressive which rises, nourishing itself with full efficiency. We ultimately cannot ignore that the note B, the one which marks in a minor way some of the most expressive works of the guitar repertoire, from the study of Sor which made generations of students fall in love with the guitar, until to that of Frank Martin's Four Pieces via La Catedral di Barrios, is the modal fulcrum of the entire Suite: it is true that the Prelude begins with a clear chord in E minor and lingers on an open ending in A minor , but it almost seems that the initial E serves as a launching pad for a continuation of the work in which the dominant, that is to say the B, is the true musical North, the pole star which guides us in the other three movements until the end of the Chaconne de Magdebourg. I wish Giorgio and our Suite great longevity and a favorable destiny in the complex and complex world of contemporary guitar composition.

Sonata No. 2, commissioned by Bokyung Byun and composed in 2024, represents the most extensive solo guitar sonata I have created to date, comprising four movements. This sonata is characterized by its flashy, mysterious, dark, and highly virtuosic nature, making it an ideal piece for both competitions and concert performances. While the Scherzo and Finale can be performed independently, or the first, third, and fourth movements can be paired for time-constrained concerts, it is advisable to perform all movements together due to their interconnectedness.«La Sonate n°2, commandée par Bokyung Byun et composée en 2024, représente la plus vaste sonate pour guitare solo que j'ai créée à ce jour, comprenant quatre mouvements. Dedicated to world renowned guitarist David Russell, Peated Waltzes is a three-movement piece that pays homage to the peated whiskies of Islay, the southernmost island of the Inner Hebrides of Scotland. The opening movement, Earthy Smoke, Sea Salt and Iodine, attempts to portray the distinctive character of the single malts of that region. Based on the Gaelic folk song The Praise of Islay (Moladh na Landaidh), the second movementâs title comes from one the songâs last verses, O, may long their wild notes flow. The third movementâs theme was extracted from the letters of Laphroaig, one of the most iconic Scotch whiskies, whose nameâs meaning inspired the title, By the Broad Bay. In the second part, the traditional Celtic melody, An Islay Pipe Reel, is quoted. At the end, themes of the previous movements are recalled and intertwined, as if trying to emulate the long and lingering finish of an Islay dram.Dédié au guitariste de renommée mondiale David Russell, « Peated Waltzes » est une pièce en trois mouvements qui rend hommage aux whiskies tourbés dâIslay, lâîle la plus méridionale des Hébrides intérieures dâÃcosse.

In this ambitious series, Bryan Johanson and Jesse McCann seek to address this missing element in the study of classical guitar. In light of the sheer volume of guitar music written over the centuries, not to men- tion early works by the guitarâs plucked-string relatives, the authorsâ choices were by necessity limited to a select group of standards. These might be considered among the most popular works in the guitar canon, admired over the years by performers, students, and audiences alike for their beauty, musical expression, and idiomatic sonority. There are, of course, other pieces that could have been included. But by choosing works that give a broad survey of styles across musical periods (Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and early 20th century) written by some of the guitarâs most important composers, the authors present a com- prehensive cross-section of the essential repertoire for the instrument.- William KanengiserDans cette série ambitieuse, Bryan Johanson et Jesse McCann cherchent à aborder cet élément manquant dans l'étude de la guitare classique.

Pierrot, or Harlequin? (2023) is based on stock characters from the Italian commedia dellâarte tradition. Columbina has a choice of partner â Pierrot, or Harlequin? Or maybe she will select neither of them. In this set of triple variations, Pierrot and Harlequin compete for Columbina's attention and favour. Pierrot is deep, quiet, thoughtful, and loving, but sometimes melancholic. Harlequin is light-hearted, extrovert, and fun to be with, but somewhat shallow and brash. The Suite for guitar aims to blend tradition and modernity through the use of a language with a neobaroque imprint. The canonical utilization of the fixed dances of the Suite (Allemande, Courante, Sarabande and Gigue preceded by an introductory Prelude) serves as a clear reference to the corresponding Baroque model characterized by alternation between slow and fast movements. The style, on the other hand, appears to be moderately dissonant, yet still focused on a well-defined tonal framework. A personal use of both dissonances and modulations is intended to enhance the auditory experience while maintaining a strong connection to a specific tonal center (E), which serves as a stable reference point in the organization of the musical material. A tribute to the inspirational Brazilian guitarist Yamandu Costa, Shanghai is Australian slang for a slingshot. This is a term I remember from my childhood in north Queensland where a shanghai made from sticks and rubber was a prized possession for a young boy up to mischief. When pulled back the rubber stretches, and as it snaps back into shape, a stone or other form of ammunition is projected into the distance. This action reminds me of the dynamic and joyful qualities of Yamandu Costaâs performances. Shanghai aims to capture some of the energy, playfulness and musical expression Yamandu brings to everything he plays.

The Spanish war galleon with 64 cannons, built in Cuba between 1770 and 1771 for an English shipowner in the service of the King of Spain left Peru for Cadiz in 1784 with a huge cargo of copper, gold, silver and other valuables on board. There were also more than 400 people on board, including passengers, crew and Inca prisoners after a revolt. The Atlantic crossing went smoothly, passing Portugal to take advantage of favourable winds. The shipwreck off Peniche was the result of human error, apparently due to French maps with dramatic errors in the position of the islands of Berlengas and neighbouring islets. On 2 February 1786, the sea was calm and the night clear, but they hit the rock formation Papoa and the hull immediately broke in two. The bottom sank quickly, while the deck remained afloat for some time. 128 people lost their lives, including many Indians who were trapped in the basement. This shipwreck is considered one of the most important in maritime history. What the composer wants to convey, and what can be felt as one listens, is first of all the sound of power, of hope, of the glory of conquest, of the splendour of wealth. This is followed by the perception of the maritime environment, the harmony with the softness of the ocean, the gliding of the hull in the foam of the sea on sunny, blue days. But along with this tranquillity, you soon hear a rhythmic chain that makes you feel a representation of the hustle and bustle, of the busy crew, of the hard work of a sailor, of the desperation of an exotic people imprisoned in a dark, damp cellar. A distinct rhythm that reminds us of the salero of Andalusia, with its Arab influences and its people, the soothing of the resignation of others who are forced to submit. Then we clearly hear a crescendo that makes us imagine the agony of the collision that precedes the shipwreck. The breaking of the hull, the water flooding everything, the despair, the clash of bodies on the rocks, the tragedy to come. Before the grand finale, in which the return of musical softness reminds us that the story is over. The supremacy of nature over human greed. The waves, though gentle, sweep the wreckage, the lives and the treasures of the New World to the bottom of the sea.
