Pavana – Capricho is one of the last pieces from Isaac Albeniz’s early period before he turned to Spanish influences – a style that would characterise the rest of his compositions. In this earlier period Albeniz who was a child prodigy on the Piano composed ‘salon style’ music and experimented with traditional styles in the manner of Rameau Bach Beethoven Chopin and Liszt. His shift towards Spanish music occurred after meeting the teacher and composer Felipe Pedrell a leading figure in the development of nationalist Spanish music.Pavana-Capricho is graceful andlight-hearted at the same time. The playfulness that arises from the alternating moods is best achieved when the proper technique and articulation is applied. Arranged for Violin and Piano and with a performance time of ca. 3:30 this piece of Romantic chamber-music is a perfect addition to any concert programme.

This work was commissioned by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra to celebrate its 40th birthday and was written for Isaac Stern. The first performance took place in June 1986 at St. Magnus' Cathedral Kirkwall as part of the tenthSt. Magnus Festival. It was given by Isaac Stern and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Andre Previn.This book contains the solo violin part and a piano reduction of the orchestral score.

The first performance took place in June 1986 at St. Magnus' Cathedral Kirkwall as part of the tenth St. Magnus Festival.Writtenfor and first performed by Isaac Stern Davies's Violin Concerto brings together two streams in his music: symphonism and folk-fiddling. In its strongly developed substance it asks to be measured in the company of Beethoven Brahms and Sibelius while there is also particularly in the middle movement a strong element of the Scots lament. The orchestra is generally muted in colour though there is a dramatic role for the timpanist.There are threemovements played without a break - this is only one of many connections with the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto.Duration c. 30mins.

Introduced to England by the German violinist Thomas Baltzar, the genre was adopted by John Jenkins, whose ten late fantasia-suites for three violins, bass viol and continuo, together with Gottfried Finger’s five sonatas for the same group of instruments, constitute the bulk of this volume.
