Maurice Bejart's great admiration for the films of Federico Fellini and their accompanying music prompted the French choreographer to seek the opportunity to collaborate with composer Nino Rota who remained Fellini's musical alter ego throughout his life. The music for Le Moliere imaginaire, a comedie-ballet in two acts in commemoration of the great French dramatist, was created during an extended period in the summer of 1976 when Bejart and Rota had allotted almost a month to be devoted solely to this project. The version of this music for piano originated during the collaborative working phase of the two artists and appears in abbreviated form at the beginning of the ballet when the curtain rises on the first act.

The composer Nino Rota is known primarily for his film scores ('Godfather', 'La dolce vita', 'Il Gattopardo', etc.). Apart from instrumental concertos, he wrote Concerto per orchestra (also under the titles of Concerto in Fa and Concerto Festivo). Rota's own arrangement for piano duet, simply entitled Concerto, formed the basis of the edition of Duo Pianistico di Firenze (Sara Bartolucci and Rodolfo Alessandrini) which is both practical and faithful to the text. Contents: I Ouverture * II Aria * III Cabaletta * IV Elegia * V Finale.

On Christmas Eve 1950, the Italian Radio broadcast a radio play based on Adalbert Stifter's novella Rock Crystal. The music was written by Nino Rota, the translation was made by Gabriella Benci and Ippolito Pizzetti (the son of the composer Ildebrando Pizzetti, one of Rota's teachers). Here, too, the duo carefully edited the existing piano version. With these two pieces, the piano duet repertoire has taken on a whole new colour, and both performers and listeners can plunge into the atmosphere of Rota's film music. Contents: I Allegretto, con intimo fervore * II Andante con moto * III Andantino * IV Andante immobile * V Allegro * VI Lento, non troppo * VII Allegro * VIII Andantino mosso * IX Mosso e leggero, appena rubato * X Andante sostenuto * XI Allegretto agitato * XII Grandioso * XIII Allegretto.

Nino Rota composed the 3 children's songs in 1935 on poems by the Italian poet, anthroposophist and children's author Lina Schwarz. Three everyday situations are illuminated from a child's perspective in poetic images: the child, who is annoyed by the carelessnessss of the sparrows against the breadcrumbs scattered around them - the dreamy young fisherman, lost in the tranquility of the sky and the sea, teased by the fish - and that homecoming child telling his mother about his day in the country. Italian.

Both waltzes are based on the famous musical cryptogram B-A-C-H and were created in 1975. The very same year, Nino Rota was asked by Federico Fellini, who was just shooting the film Casanova, to write pieces he wanted to use for his film. Thus, Due Valzer sul nome BACH became a part of the film score of Fellini's Casanova and ultimately its main motifs. The third waltz in this series remained unfinished.
