Score for Scatter Roses Over My Tears a meditation on Jalalu-d-din R mi by John Tavener for string quartet.

Written in memory of innocent victims this dramatic piece is ideally performed within a church. It uses texts form the Gospels St Ephrem the Syrian the Old testament Shakespeare and from Mathnawi of Jalal al-Din Rumi.The work begins in a musical wasteland seemingly hopeless and without redemption. Words are turned upside down with apocalyptic screams from the organ. The work ends with an echo of this opening but the suffering this time isinside redemption. All the various streams come from this and flow back into it in the pianissimo canon “The son of man is come to save that which is lost.” Contains detailed performance suggestions; duration is25 minutes.

If Ye Love Me by John Tavener was commissioned by Manchester International Festival (MIF Creative) with thanks to the support of the MIF Commissioning Circle. In If Ye LoveMe there are subtle echo-effects between three String Quartets which are complimented by an upper Voice choir.

In the final song Deaththe musical material of the earlier songs is gathered together. Mahamatar (Cello Part). Mahámátar is written for Oriental or Middle-Eastern female voice, distant boys' voices (in a vast acoustic), tubular bells and muted strings. The music is an invocation to the Great Mother Mahámátar in Sanskrit, and to the Theotóke (God-bearer) in Greek. Originally written to accompany a fi lm by Werner Herzog which deals with South American Indians who travel for many miles on their knees to venerate the miraculous Ikon of The Mother of God of Guadalupe. Mahámátar may be performed by a solo voice or alternatively the melody could be played by a solo cello, with decorations and improvisations by the singer.

For solo Cello Timpani and Strings.Popule Meus was commissioned through the Magnum Opus project: Kathryn Gould founding patron and commissioner and Meet the Composer project manager.It was first performed on 6thFebruary 2010 by Yuri Hooker (cello) and the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra conducted by Alexander Micklethwate. Composer's Notes 'Popule Meus is a meditation on the Judaic and Christian text ?O my People whathave I done to you?? but itis also a Universalist contemplation of the wholesale rejection of God by modern man. However much manrejects God he cannot escape Him and indeed he is condemned to the supernatural by his deiformnature. InHindu terms he is the Absolute Ayam Atma Brahma (The Self is the Absolute).In this work the solo cello is the All-Compassionate One while the timpani represent man in his vain andpointless rejection. Although the solocello and strings and the timpani share the same material (four ideas aregradually revealed and they revolve four times during the piece) the timpani music is violent and becomesincreasingly frenzied and contracted while thecello and strings remain still and serene.So even in winning the Darkness loses and even in losing the Light wins. Passion Resurrection andRedemption; or in Hindu terms Atma (The Absolute) alone is real Maya (The Relative) ismerely illusion.'

Written for string orchestra or string quartet.This work was commissioned by the Cheltenham International Music Festival to celebrate Michael Berkeley’s ten years as Festival Director. It was first performed on 18th July2004 at the Bacon Theatre Dean Close School Cheltenham by the National Youth Orchestra Sinfonietta conducted by Geoffrey Paterson.This work is a brief contemplation of Sir Lennox Berkeley calmly remembering himthrough his son Michael for performance at the 2004 Cheltenham Festival.
