This piece for unaccompanied viola solo transforms the gentle arches of Bach's theme into slowly soaring arpeggi of almost unending phrase lengths. Originally written for cello it was premiered by Yo-Yo Ma in Boston in 1997 inmemory of Robert Goldberg. This version for viola is edited by Melia Watras.
