The Spiders' Revenge is a short music-theatre work (duration about 25 minutes) designed for performance by primary school children. The work was written for Evie Primary School a small rural school in Orkney of about 60 pupils between the ages of five and eleven and was specially devised to enhance an environmental studies project on 'mini-beasts'. All the pupils in the school took part in the first performance. Two children playing in a garden delight in tormenting ladybirds snails spiders and other living creatures who they claim 'have no right to be'. The spiders teach the children a salutary lesson during the course of which they learn a great deal aboutthe ways of these creatures finally recognizing the wonder of the insect world and acknowledging that all 'have their place on the earth'.The songs include simple recorder and percussion parts and guitar chords. Peter Maxwell Davies sets Barbara Newman's translation of a text by Hildegard von Bingen for SATB chorus and Organ. The work was commissioned by Epsom College to celebrate the one hudred and fiftieth anniversary of the College.The first performance took place in February 2005 in Guildford Cathedral by the choir of Epsom College.

In 1971 Davies adapted the original Sandy Wilson music and wrote some of his own for Ken Russell's film of The Boy Friend. The music like the film goes way over the top in reviving the style of the 1930s and the suiteincludes careful and wickedly acute notations of period conventions; swoops sickly vibratos toy percussion instruments and the rest. Arrangements of the songs with piano links are followed by a fantasy in which the heroinedreams up dances by Davies himself.

This work was commissioned by the Naxos Recording Company and is the eighth in a series of ten quartets. It was first performed on 10th March 2006 by the Maggini Quartet at St. Gregory’s Centre Canterbury Christ ChurchUniversity Canterbury as part of the Sounds New Festival.Naxos Quartet No. 8 is dedicated to Her Majesty the Queen on her 80th birthday.

This consists of five short movements. They were written for the Sunday lunchtime magazine programme ‘Not Now I’m Listening’ and were first broadcast on BBC Radio 4 on 6 November 1977. The work was first performed in concert bythe Fires of London at the 1978 Edinburgh Festival.

This work was a test piece for the International string Quartet competition in 2005 Premio Paulo Borciani It was inspired by a keyboard piece of the same name A Sad Paven for these Distracted Tymes by Thomas Tomkins(1572-1656). Tomkins had a long association with Worcester Cathedral where he was organist - appointed magister choristarum in 1596 - and lived within the precincts until shortly before his death. At the same time he wasorganist of the Chapel Royal. When the city of Worcester surrendered to Cromwell's parliamentary forces in 1646 Tomkins had to watch the hasty dismantling of his cathedral organ and the abolition of all choral services. Thesewere the 'distracted tymes' of the 'sad paven' which he wrote in enforced retirement at Worcester.

A superb cycle of 7 songs depicting the hero's stay on Grandma's farm somewhere in the Orkneys one summer. The songs tell of the farm chores nature and ghosts and are arranged for unison voices piano recorders and pitched or unpitched percussion.
