The study score of Bela Bartok's Divertimento for String Orchestra. Written in 1939 the piece is the last of Bartok's European writing before his intended flee to America to escape the war. Characterised by his fascinating use of Balkan harmonies and tonalities the writing represents Bartok's increasingly classical clarity of form and texture. The small-format study score is ideal for students of music or as a convenient reference for conductors and musicians. Hawkes Pocket Score edition 28.

This Sonata for Solo Violin was completed in March 1944 and was Bartok’s penultimate work. It was composed for Yehudi Menuhin who gave the first performance in New York on 26th November 1944. At this time more than any other Bartok was writing less complex more minimal rhythms which served to highlight his glorious melodies. Typically for Bartok this is a satisfying if serious and solemn work but one that will delight with its virtuosic elements and interesting melodic movements.

The four-movement Suite op. 14 was composed in 1916 and was one of Bartók?s favourite piano works throughout his life. Unlike in his other works for piano of these years he did not use any folksong melodies or folkloristicelements here. Instead he endeavoured to achieve a new more ?abstract? transparent piano style that forgoes ornament and embellishment. A special feature of this Henle edition is the appendix with an additional Andante movementthat was originally intended to come before the Scherzo but which Bartók removed from the Suite only shortly before its publication in 1918. The Urtext edition of this important work in the concert repertoire follows the musicaltext of the Bartók Complete Edition. It has been edited by perhaps the most distinguished Bartók scholar in the world today László Somfai who has also written the comprehensive introduction to the work and who offers helpfulsuggestions regarding its interpretation.

For String Instruments Percussion and Celesta-The Music for Strings Percussion...(+)
For String Instruments Percussion and Celesta-The Music for Strings Percussion and Celesta is a central work not only in Bartók's ?uvre it is also recognized as a key work in the music of the 20th century.ln spite of the work's monothematic conception all four movements have their own individual character. The constant return of the fugal theme from the first movement gives an organic unity to a series of complementary moods. The theme appears either in its original form or in inversions sometimes slow in a chromatic trepidation and elsewhere as an expression of pure diatonic dignity and joy. All in all the work is a masterpiece both of construction and of musicalpoetry. (Ferenc Bónis taken from the preface)

Folk Dances: Violin:
Instrumental Work Violin and Piano - Intermediate/advanced Universal Edition
The 'Romanian Folk Dances' undoubtedly rank amongst Bartók's most popular compo...(+)
The 'Romanian Folk Dances' undoubtedly rank amongst Bartók's most popular compositions. The earliest version is scored for piano (1915) and was published by Universal Edition in 1918. The composer himself orchestrated this version in 1917. Several other chamber music arrangements (for example Zoltán Székely's version for violin and piano) were not by Bartók although he authorised them. The musical material derives from Bartók's collections of folk music which date right back to 1904 when he wrote down a melody sung by a Hungarian peasant girl. In the course of extensive travels throughout Eastern Europe Bartókcompiled an enormous collection of folk tunes (by 1918 his collection comprised no fewer than 2700 Hungarian 3500 Romanian and 3000 Slovak dances and songs) which would in all probability have been lost had Bartók not written them down. As it was some of them found their way into his compositions. In 1908 Bartók jotted down dance tunes in Transsylvania. They are the source of the 'Romanian Folk Dances'.

The definitive edition (1987) of the piano teaching classic. Includes an introduction by the composer's son Peter Bartók.
In 1945 Bela Bartok described 'Mikrokosmos' as a cycle of 153 pieces for piano written for 'didactic' purposes, seeing them as a series of pieces in many different styles, representing a small world, or as the 'world of the little ones, the children'. Stylistically Mikrokosmos reflects the influence of folk music on Bartók's life and the rhythms and harmonies employed create music that is as modern today as when the cycle was written.
The 153 pieces making up 'Mikrokosmos' are divided into six volumes arranged according to technical and musical difficulty. / Partition /

Bartók?s Mikrokosmos is one of the milestones in the pedagogical piano repertoire and yet it is also far more than a ?classical? piano primer. These 153 piano pieces organised in ascending order of difficulty engage not onlywith technical aspects of piano playing but also with the fundamentals of composition from ?Ostinato? ?Free variations? and ?Imitation and inversion? concerning compositional technique to programmatic ideas as in ?From thediary of a fly? or the famous ?Six dances in Bulgarian rhythm? that form the passionate close of this unique work. This Henle Urtext Edition is based on the corresponding volume of the Bartók Complete Edition that is currently inpreparation and also includes specific practical comments and tips concerning Bartók?s own performances. Furthermore the six volumes of the first edition which first appeared in 1940 are here gathered together in threepractical double volumes that offer both beginners and advanced pianists a perfect introduction to this work.

These six dances form the final culmination of Bartók?s ?Mikrokosmos? (HN 1408-1410) that work of the century comprising over 150 pieces. He dedicated this grouping collected under its own title to the famous English pianist Harriet Cohen. Inspired this specialist for contemporary music found in them ?a whole world of music? and championed the pieces. Bartók himself added the dances to his concert repertory early on though initially in a reduced form that omitted the fifth dance which was not composed until the end of 1939 as one of the last works of the collection. Our practical standalone Urtext edition of these six dances also featuresan early version of the concluding piece and supplies interesting background details about Bartók?s own recital practice. This edition?s musical text is based on that of the Bartók Complete Edition.
