Every now and then, I find myself having a little
trouble getting these hymn arrangements just right.
There have been a few pieces I’ve made multiple
attempts at, and Onward, Christian Soldiers is one of
those. My first arrangement of it was one of my first
ever arrangements, and, not quite satisfied at that, I
made a second arrangement of it a few years later. I
wasn’t quite satisfied with that one either, so I

decent, and you the player may prefer one of those.
Whether you find it easier, better, or just more
enjoyable, you might like 1 or 2 better than 3 (1 is,
in fact, probably the easiest one). Historically,
composers have been very bad judges of their own
works—Tchaikovsky initially called his Fifth
Symphony, one of his greatest compositions, a
failure—so I figured you should have the opportunity
to decide which of these versions you would like to
play. Or, for variety, you may play one sometime and
play another another time. They are all available for
