In none of his works with the exception of the Requiem did Mozart again reach let alone surpass the lofty seriousness and the religious dedication of his Grand Mass in C Minor. The strict manner of the composition that prevails almost throughout the use of five and eight-part choruses the breadth of the solo movements as well as the treatment of the orchestra raise it infinitely above all his earlier works in this genre and place it beside the great Masses of Bach and Beethoven.The work was written for double chorus of mixed voices four solo voices and orchestra. Mozart never finished the Grand Mass and it has been completed by Alois Schmitt. This edition containsa piano reduction of the orchestral parts.

In a letter dating from 1777 Mozart reported to his father from Mannheim that Johann Baptist Wendling principal Flautist of the famous Mannheim Orchestra had been approached by a wealthy Dutch businessman by the name of De Jean who was prepared to pay 200 gulden for three easy flute concertos and four flute quartets for his own use. Mozart accepted the commission. By the day before the Dutchman left Mozart had delivered only three of the quartets andtwo concertos for which he had been paid 964 gulden. The composer who was himself being pressed by his father to continue his own journey to Paris with his mother was full of excuses writing back to Salzburg on 14 February 'It is not surprising I have been unable to finish them for I never have a single hour's quiet here...Moreover you know I become quite powerless when I am obliged to write for an instrument I can't stand.' There is more than a hint of disingenuousness in Mozart's words for this was the height of the period during which he was being distracted from his work by his new-found love for the Mannheim singer Aloysia Weber. (He ultimatelymarried her sister Constanze.) If Mozart's dislike of the Flute was as great as he claimed there are few signs in the Flute Concerto No.1 in G major particularly in the expressive central Adagio ma non troppo. The outermovements are an Allegro maestoso and a concluding Rondo: Tempo di Menuetto. The work is scored for two oboes (replaced by flutes in the Adagio) two horns and strings. The final movement of the Sonata in A major KV 331 by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, the Rondo Alla Turca, is one of the most famous piano pieces of all time. Once only familiar to musical experts, later a universal piece for all piano pupils, its opening melody is now even omnipresent as an alienated sinus tone-like mobile phone ring tone. Fazil Say's arrangement, originally created as an effective encore, follows on from this popularity. After the first eight bars have been presented in original form, typical elements of jazz superimposed on the still recognisable classical foundations can be discovered, such as syncopation of the top notes and ornamentation through chromatic blue notes, embedded in the at times frenzied chains of semiquavers. In the spirit of the work's improvisatory character, Say likes to perfom his Alla Turca Jazz in different combinations, for example accompanied by jazz singers of with orchestra. It may appear strange that Fazil Say, who was born in Turkey and - when not on tour - is still resident in that country, does not bring back Mozart's interpretation of genuine Turkish music closer to its own roots, particularly as many of his compositions such as Black Earth or the Violin Sonata are characterised by a subtle amalgamation of the Classical-Romantic tradition, Turkish folk music and elements of jazz. In a further Mozart arrangement, the ballet music Patara premiered in Vienna in 2006, composed on the basis of the Rococo-like theme from the first movement of the same A-major Sonata (wich enjoys almost as great popularity as the Alla Turca theme), Say utilised the connection which was absent in Alla Turca, albeit in the opposite direction. Her brother Wolfgang Amadeus soon acquired the book from his older sister. From an early age he displayed a particular talent for composing whereupon his father also wrote down his son?s first works in this music book. Mozart's Requiem in D Minor is a sublime work. The Kyrie is a masterful lesson in fugal writing, requiring the students to 'count like crazy.' Every section of the orchestra plays the syncopated entries, tied rhythms, and running sixteenth note passages. The tempo can be slightly adjusted to suit the technical ability of the ensemble. Eighth notes should be slightly separated, whilst 16th notes are played detaché. This arrangement would make an interestingly contrasted concert item with Loreta Fin's arrangement of the beautiful 'Lacrymosa' from the same Requiem (76-44507). / Orchestre A Cordes
