Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: Eight Operatic Arias For The Soprano Voice

Violin Sonatas Fragments-This Urtext edition contains rewarding discoveries for all lovers of Mozart.Mozart left behind a total of eight unfinished works for Piano and Violin predominantly discontinued sonata movements. Themusic is so wonderful that Henle have published a separate volume with this group of works all of which (aside from a fragment in the appendix of this edition) have been completed so that they can be performed.They notonly include the familiar completed versions by Maximilian Stadler but also new ones by Robert D. Levin. He has contributed five each of which is full of Mozartian spirit. A preface with a critical report presents the facts indetail and incorporates the most recent scholarly findings. Mozart’s final year was a difficult one as his employment was precarious his financial situation usually quite desperate and his wife Constanze frequently in ill health and at the spa in Baden near Vienna for treatments. On one such occasion in June of 1791 Mozart visited her and while there composed a short sacramental anthem for his friend Anton Stoll organist and choirmaster of the Baden parish church. The exquisite Ave verum corpus (K.618) was the first piece of sacred music he had written in over eight years (and the last before his unfinished Requiem) and has proven to be one of his most beloved compositions. Within six months of its writing Mozart himself hadfallen seriously ill and died in December of that year.

Music for wind ensemble also know as Harmoniemusik played an important part in Mozart’s Austria. Wind ensembles were not only cheaper to employ but they also were suitable for outdoor performance and so appealed to the lesser nobility of the time.Mozart composed the three great wind serenades during his first two years in Vienna with the first of them the Serenade No.10 in B flat K.361 seeing a huge expansion in terms of instrumentation and length. Instead of six (or eight) instruments this serenade is scored for thirteen instruments which include a string double bass. The use of the string bass suggests this work waswritten to be performed indoors unlike those which had preceded it.Available here is a highly authoritative Eulenburg miniature score of Mozart’s Serenade No.10 in B flat K.361 as edited by Harry Newstone which is the definitive reference source for study perusal and performance preparation.

The pieces in the present volume are taken for the most part from Mozart's so-called 'London Sketch Book' written on his English tour in the year 1764 at the age of eight. There are also several earlier pieces which the young Mozart wrote in Salzburg in 1762. The original text has been retained; obvious errors in notation have been corrected.

In a letter dating from 1777 Mozart reported to his father from Mannheim that Johann Baptist Wendling principal Flautist of the famous Mannheim Orchestra had been approached by a wealthy Dutch businessman by the name of De Jean who was prepared to pay 200 gulden for three easy flute concertos and four flute quartets for his own use. Mozart accepted the commission. By the day before the Dutchman left Mozart had delivered only three of the quartets andtwo concertos for which he had been paid 964 gulden. The composer who was himself being pressed by his father to continue his own journey to Paris with his mother was full of excuses writing back to Salzburg on 14 February 'It is not surprising I have been unable to finish them for I never have a single hour's quiet here...Moreover you know I become quite powerless when I am obliged to write for an instrument I can't stand.' There is more than a hint of disingenuousness in Mozart's words for this was the height of the period during which he was being distracted from his work by his new-found love for the Mannheim singer Aloysia Weber. (He ultimatelymarried her sister Constanze.) If Mozart's dislike of the Flute was as great as he claimed there are few signs in the Flute Concerto No.1 in G major particularly in the expressive central Adagio ma non troppo. The outermovements are an Allegro maestoso and a concluding Rondo: Tempo di Menuetto. The work is scored for two oboes (replaced by flutes in the Adagio) two horns and strings. When Maria Anna Mozart, known as Nannerl, was to receive piano lessons, her father gave her a music book in which he and others gradually wrote down little recital pieces. Her brother Wolfgang Amadeus soon acquired the book from his older sister. From an early age he displayed a particular talent for composing whereupon his father also wrote down his son’s first works in this music book. The “Nannerl Music Book” thus contains 17 pieces written by Mozart when he was between the ages of five and eight, all of which are easy to play – ideal pieces for beginners. Our edition is taken from the complete volume of Mozart’s Piano Pieces, HN 22, and contains a new preface by the editor Ullrich Scheideler especially written for beginners.

THE AMADEUS WATCH: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart?s own watch ? if he had one ? ticks away. The ticking carries us back in time with a piece that stylistically imitates the music of the 18th century in melody, harmony and rhythm. 2. COMPOSERS DINNER IN HEAVEN: At the music publisher De Haske, a composers? dinner was an integral part of trade fairs or meetings. The dinner was very popular among anyone who sat at it, not least of all because it offered one the opportunity to chat informally. ?Based on such a meeting, Otto M. Schwarz has a composed a work that describes an imaginary dinner of great classical masters on a cloud in the sky. Guess which composers are present by the references in the form of musical quotations and stylistic devices! 3. SCHERZO FOR SAXOPHONE QUARTET: The work, in 12/8 time, moves in a rapid furioso. Underscored by a continues eighth note rhythm, the work creates in the listener the sensation of a frantic rollercoaster ride. The theme moves throughout all the parts and, following a chromatically moving chord sequence, ends in a dramatic crescendo.

Mozart's Requiem in D Minor is a sublime work. The Kyrie is a masterful lesson in fugal writing, requiring the students to 'count like crazy.' Every section of the orchestra plays the syncopated entries, tied rhythms, and running sixteenth note passages. The tempo can be slightly adjusted to suit the technical ability of the ensemble. Eighth notes should be slightly separated, whilst 16th notes are played detaché. This arrangement would make an interestingly contrasted concert item with Loreta Fin's arrangement of the beautiful 'Lacrymosa' from the same Requiem (76-44507). / Orchestre A Cordes

Two volumes entitled Cello Meets Piano edited and published by Árpád Pejtsik were issued many years ago by the Könemann Music Budapest. The first edition was quickly sold out and no further editions followed. EMB has undertaken to issue a new edition entitled Cello & Piano with the content unchanged. The two volumes contain a selection from 200 years of music. Eight Baroque sonatas are included apart from the famous D minor one by Corelli there are some that are appearing in a modern edition for the first time in 300 years. In addition to cyclical works (Haydn: Sonatina Mozart: Divertimento Vivaldi: Concerto)and sets of variations (Beethoven Tartini) there are many shorter pieces as well not only the famous minuets by Boccherini Mozart and Beethoven but also works published for the first time here.
