The Respiration of the Earth is inspired by the breathing motion. The music focuses on the tension of the air of breathing. There are many different types of breathing such as slow breath, long breath, short breath, holding breath, uneven breath, etc. The shape of the music is created by the inhale and exhale motion. The piece starts with a long holding breath, gradually create a tension until one can't hold that breath and release the air out. The Suona is acting as the motion of the air so the orchestra has to follow. This piece ends with the chaotic motion so the audiences can feel the tension as if they are running out of breath. It's a main concern about the environment of the Earth so this piece is a message to people to keep the environment clean so the Earth can breath for a longer time. Respiration of the Earth is commissioned and dedicated to Mr. Shi Haibin with the gracious support from John Simon Guggenheim Foundation. The Respiration of the Earth is inspired by the breathing motion. In Greek mythology Hermes was the messenger of the gods, and the god of merchants. The piece starts with a powerful four-measure introduction, followed by the solemn 1st theme and the heroic 2nd theme. After the gentle trio section, the music increases in tension with several key changes, and a dynamic grand finale concludes the piece. This is a spirited concert march with positive musical energy throughout the piece. Hermes is de Griekse god van de handel en de boodschapper van de goden. Often referred to as the Dean of African American Composers, William Grant Still's illustrious career contained many ground-breaking achievements. Following the massive success of his critically acclaimed Symphony No. 1, the Afro-American Symphony (1930), Still's Symphony No. 2 was premiered in 1937 by the Philadelphia Orchestra under the direction of conductor Leopold Stokowski. The work, subtitled Song of a New Race, infuses elements of blues and jazz into the classical form, creating a uniquely blended sound to reflect Still's vision of an increasingly diverse American culture. Slow, dreamy themes are expressed through lush harmonies utilizing thick textures along with solo and divisi playing. The tension between traditional and jazz idioms is felt in the push and pull of shifting tempo and tonality. Originally composed for Full Orchestra, this slightly abridged version for String Orchestra includes the original harp part, honoring the legacy of one of America's greatest composers.Often referred to as the Dean of African American Composers, William Grant Still's illustrious career contained many ground-breaking achievements. Searc hing for Destiny's Diamond is a mysterious work that centers around the idea of young people searching out their destiny during dark times. It involves intrigue and tension, as they journey towards their purpose and the diamond that is their bright future. Every instrument in the orchestra begins with the melody and plays it throughout the piece, making this work an excellent teaching piece since all parts can be learned at the same time. The second half of the work is a musical stretto with the melodic figure offset by one measure in Violin II, Viola and Bass. This makes for some intriguing harmonies that will increase the student's hearing ability and bring tension to the piece. While this piece can be performed without piano, it is desired that the piano be played in performance, as it adds intrigue to the sound. The piano part has been written so that it can be performed by developing pianists. To facilitate performances when no player is available, a recorded piano part is available at www.carlfischer.com/FAS12 1.Searching for Destiny’s Diamond is a mysterious work that centers around the idea of young people searching out their destiny during dark times.
