The guitar studies of Fernando Sor (1778-1839) have long been valued highly among the indispensable elements of a guitarist's training. A number of prominent virtuosi attribute a large portion of their development to the diligentstudy of these works. Sor's studies address an impressive array of technical and musical topics including proper left-hand fingering training of the right hand interval and chord formations scales arpeggios repeated notes ligados barring natural harmonics control of note duration balance of melody versus accompaniment and the handling of contrapuntal voices. A careful study of these pieces will lay the groundwork for a solid technique andallow the guitarist to build the control necessary for the expression of his or her musical concepts. In preparing this edition David Grimes worked with Sor's original publications but incorporated some alterations that appear inthose studies that Napoleon Coste chose to include in his Methode complete pour la Guitarre par Ferdinand Sor. Furthermore Mr. Grimes has corrected misprints modernized the notation and rectified some inconsistencies. Finally some developments in technique since Sor's day have been incorporated in this edition.

The tenth concerto in B minor in L'Estro Armonico (best translated as The Harmonious Inspiration) which is edited here in A minor - for four solo guitars - is one of the most famous in the entire collection -- indeed inVivaldi's entire output. Scored for four solo violins two solo violas solo violoncello and an strings orchestra. Johann Sebastian Bach not only admired Vivaldi's Opus 3; he copied it openly. In a general sense the Vivaldipieces gave impetus to much that is in the German master's Brandenburg Concertos. More particulary six concertos of Vivaldi's Opus 3 were copied by Bach as the basis for six of his concertos: two for 0rgan (BWV 593 and 596 basedon Opus 3 nos. 8 and 11 respectively) three for solo harpsichord ) BWV 978 972 and 976 based on Opus 3 nos. 3 9 and 12 respectively) and one for four harpsichords and orchestra in A minor (BWV 1065 based on Opus 3 no. 10).Bach frequently rewrote concertos scored for one kind of instrument substituting another. It is evident that Bach thought not so much in terms of the violinistic nature of the originals but in their harmonic and rhythmicpotential which could be realized on any instrument. Since Bach has already justified an arrangement of Opus 3 number 10 by the great aesthetic success of his four-harpsichord version it serves to reason that an arrangementfor four guitars is equally valid. Just as Bach preserved everything of the original Vivaldi and added only a few doubling to accomodate the left hands of the harpsichordists so in this version the substitution of guitars is donewith little or no change of original-notes. The arpeggios especially prominent in the second movement lend themselves ideally to guitar playing and the ability of the guitar to play both lyrical lines as well as passage worksuits the violinistic lines and passages of the original.

It is very methodical, beginning with photographs of hand positions etc, and gives explanations of both rest and free stroke from the start. The first musical examples are open string melodies with added chord symbols with plenty of varied exampIes, and blank staves are given for note-writing exercises and also for aural tests, both of which are useful ideas for reinforcing general musical understanding. Apart from chord symbols, the left hand is first introduced with natural harmonics at the twelfth fret in an effective two-part exercise Carillon, which requires right fingers and thumb. Combinations of open strings and right-hand arpeggios follow and the opening section is brought to a natural close with Valse des Harmoniques - nicely shaped and quite complex with its use of natural harmonics, but a bit over-long. Camisassa now introduces notes on each string, in turn, in first position, and more complex arpeggio patterns, illustrated by pieces utilising each new group of notes. 2-guitar arrangements of tunes including Frere Jacques and Au Clair de la lune and Alouette, gentille alouette work quite weIl with straightforward accompaniments. I liked Camisassa's Tango, and Recuerdo de mi infanta, a two-part milonga reminiscent of Cardoso. Favourites such as Greensleeves and Malaguena are also included, and there are many pieces by Camisassa included which aim to enforce musical ideas. I found the way this book progresses, and the technical and musical aspects it teaches, very good and very thorough. I found myself using it a lot as supplementary material to demonstrate technical points and for sight-reading. However, the majority of pieces written by Camisassa did not inspire me musically and would need to be supplemented with pieces of more characterful musical interest, particularly for young players, but this volume does have much to offer.(Linda Kelsall Barnett, Classical Guitar Magazine, June 2002) / Guitare
