Bac h composed the cantata Jesus schlaft, was soll ich hoffen [Jesus sleeps, what hope have I] BWV 81 for the fourth Epiphany Sunday, 1724. The cantata is structured as a little drama: In the beginning, fear prevails. The seas rage and Jesus is asleep. The threateningly foaming waves are vividly depicted in the soughing string accompaniment of the tenor aria. Jesus's words Ihr Kleinglaubigen, warum seid ihr so furchtsam? [You of little faith, why are you so fearful?] are set as a bass arioso at the center of the cantata; they provide the turning point. In the subsequent bass aria, the towering seas are silenced. A recitative - Wohl mir [Well for me] - leads into the closing chorale with its certainty Unter deinen Schirmen bin ich vor den Sturmen aller Feinde frei [Under Your protection I am spared the tempests of my enemies]. The present setting of Psalm 150 from 1884 is one of Cesar Franck's late works. It shows the highly individual elements of the composer's style in concentrated form: a consciously symphonic idiom, bold and unmistakable harmonies, largely characterized by their chromaticism and unusual concepts of form. The popularity of this work has largely been hindered by the need for large instrumental resources for so short a piece. The present arrangement of the Psalm for choir, strings and organ (ad libitum: harp and percussion) is intended as a compromise that retains much of the original sonority, but keeping the work within the scope and possibilities of churches desirous of performing works with instrumental accompaniment within the context of liturgy. Score and part available separately - see item CA.4009800.

The cantata Die Himmel erzahlen die Ehre Gottes (The heavens are telling of God in glory) BWV 76 by Johann Sebastian Bach was written for the 2nd Sunday after Trinity, which fell on 6 June 1723 in the year it was first performed. This ambitious two-part work was the second cantata which Bach wrote after taking up the position of Kantor of St. Thomas's in Leipzig. Bach's aim was evidently to demonstrate a particularly wide range of musical forms in both the arias and the recitatives in this cantata. The opening chorus is based on verses 2 and 4 of Psalm 19, with verse 4 structured as a choral fugue. Both parts of the cantata end with a chorale movement with different verses from the Lutheran hymn Es woll uns Gott genadig sein. The text refers loosely to the epistle reading from the 1st letter of St John, but deals more with general thoughts about the temptations of the Christian which can be overcome through love. Bach also performed the first part of the cantata later with minor revisions, but evidently no alterations to the text, on Reformation Day in Leipzig. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.3107600.

“AL 30 754 - MILA AND THE SHIP TREE - Choral Partitur For decades the French composer Isabelle Aboulker has been very successful with vocal works for children and young people, in whom well-known fairy tales are processed. Now she has once again met with Mila and the Schiffbaum, a work commissioned by the Académie musicale by Villecroze in the course of the project ”“3 composers write for the school”“, and by the French music publishers with the music prize 2015 in the category ”“ Works for young performers ”“. With this composition, Isabelle Aboulker has created a musical story for narrator, children's choir and instrumental accompaniment, which helps children between five and eight years in educational and valuable ways to gain first experiences with music theater and choral singing. Thanks to an excellent German translation, the successful work can now also be found in the German-speaking world. With the deep sensitivity and subtlety that is the secret of her art, Isabelle Aboulker tells of a little girl who succeeds in getting over the loss of a loved one, namely, his grandfather. The highly charming melodies of this piece, written for unanimous children's choir, are joined by an instrumental accompaniment in which tender melancholy and subtle humor alternate - this musical language comes directly from the heart. AL 30 753 - version for speaker, children's choir and piano (German and French text) The work is also available in English translation: AL 30 732 - version for speaker, children's choir and piano (French and English text) AL 30 743 - Choral Partitur (French and English text) As well as with other instrumental accompaniments: AL 30 733 - version for speaker, children's choir and trio (clarinet in B, cello and piano) (French and English text) AL 30 734 - version for spokesman, children's choir and instrumental ensemble (French, English, German, French, Italian, Italian&rdquo.

Since the days of Renaissance composers - beyond accusations of plagiarism - the admiration for a fellow composer has taken the form of quotations from his works or even new versions of his works. No less a work from the classical period than Joseph Haydn's oratorio The Creation (first performed in 1798), was the basis for the Schopfungsmesse (Creation Mass) by the Salzburg Court and Cathedral Music Director, Luigi Gatti. Gatti heard the oratorio in Salzburg performances conducted by Johann Michael Haydn in 1800. With great skill and sensitivity Gatti was able to underlay the choruses and arias of The Creation with the text of the Mass (at times he reduced and adapted the instrumentation), without doing harm to the admired original. Score and part available separately - see item CA.2705300.

The writer Charles Marie Rene Leconte, born on the French island of La Reunion, published his literary works under the nom de plume Leconte de Lisle (the Count of the island). His poem Nell, a poetic vow of eternal fidelity to the beloved, was written in 1852 and set to music by Gabriel Faure in 1878. Long vocal phrases unfold over continuous sixteenth-note figurations in the piano, which combine emphatic depictions of nature and affirmations of love both in text and music. These art songs were originally composed not for chamber choir, but for solo voice and piano. Denis Rouger has carefully adapted them to suit the requirements and expressive possibilities offered by a larger ensemble, without losing the any of the qualities of the original in the process. Each part in the choir has a melodic line drawn from the harmonic and rhythmic framework. In the process, the variety and refinement of the choral language combines with an enormous flexibility in form and expression, as French melodies or German art song demand from a soloist and pianist. The songs have been recorded by the figure humaine chamber choir on the CD Kennst du das Land ... (Carus 83.495).
