New from Christy and Daniel Semsen and WordKidz, All About That Baby is a delightfully fresh presentation of the blessed story of Jesus' birth.People everywhere are making the journey to the place of their birth, in compliance with Caesar's decree that everyone should register for the census. This results in the little town of Bethlehem overflowing with people arriving from out of town. Nathaniel, a lovable but scatter-brained, late-for-work shepherd, bumps into two of those travelers, Joanna and Simone, as he rushes to take his shift at watching the flock. The other shepherds (his sisters Miriam and Abigail), along with Judah, are waiting for Nathaniel--late once again--to arrive. Thus begins a story that is All About That Baby, with some shepherds, angels, out-of-towners...and singing, talking sheep to guide us along the way!Song Titles: Morning in Bethlehem (Underscore 1A), Morning in Bethlehem (Underscore 1B) * Waiting for a Miracle with O Come,O Come, Emmanuel; Sheep Trip (Underscore 2) * Sheep Stuff; A Deep, Dark Night (Underscore 3) * Messiah * All About that Baby * Star in the Sky with We Three Kings; Plan B (Underscore 4); Sheep Run (Underscore 5) * That Holy Night with O Holy Night * He Shall Reign Forevermore * Hope for a Broken World with Sheep Stuff and All About that Baby (Reprise) * Sheep Bows.

As with scarcely any other work of the 17th century, Monteverdi's Vespers has found its way into today's repertoire. Nevertheless, the Vespers still leaves open many questions. The new edition, with its critical examination of the sources, takes up these oft-discussed issues concerning scoring possibilities, performance practice, transpositions and liturgical unity. It is based on all of the surviving copies of the print of 1610 and the earliest handwritten entries have also been critically examined and evaluated. Performance material is organized in a flexible manner to allow for the use of different instruments in those movements without obbligato instruments in order to reinforce the vocal parts and thus invites an individual musical approach to the challenge presented by Monteverdi's Vespers. Score and part available separately - see item CA.2780100.

The best-known setting of the Requiem Mass before Mozart's unfinished work is by the celebrated opera composer Niccolo Jommelli. The Missa pro defunctis was composed in 1756, during Jommelli's time as Kapellmeister at the court of the Wurttemberg Duke Carl Eugen, on the occasion of the death of the Dowager Duchess Maria Augusta. The work went on to enjoy wide circulation and numerous further performances. Jommelli composed it in the Neapolitan style, with orchestral forces of just strings and basso continuo. The simple but effective choral movements are partly contrapuntal in the stile antico, and partly with solo/tutti alternation and numerous suspended dissonances, whilst in the solo parts the opera composer can be recognized. This beautiful sounding Missa pro defunctis is now published for the first time in a critical edition. Where sections are missing in Jommelli's composition, the Appendix contains settings by another composer from his circle, Nicola Sala. * The best-known setting of the Requiem Mass before Mozart * First critical edition * Effective choral movements with numerous suspended dissonances and solo/tutti alternation * Scored for small instrumental forces of strings and organ.

Featuring a familiar and brief Latin text, this jubilant Christmas work opens and closes like a Renaissance fanfare and offers rich contrast at its core. Scattered duple eighth notes in a compound meter, several key and mode shifts, and changing tempi add interest to the joyful sound.

The cantata dates from Bach's time in Weimar. The instrumental scoring of four violas and basso continuo - in the Leipzig performances enhanced by two recorders doubling viola I and II at the octave - is unique in Bach's cantata oeuvre. It lends a dark, luxurious sound to the four movements which is gently illuminated by the recorders. The work - with its instrumental sinfonia, a short secco recitative and an extended accompagnato recitative (both of which contain arioso inserts), a short soprano aria and a simple closing chorale - makes no great demands on the performing forces. Admirers of text interpretation by means of instrumental figuration will be richly rewarded. Score and part available separately - see item CA.3101800.

Di mitri Stepanowitsch Bortniansky (1751-1825) seems to have composed the majority of his liturgical works and most of his Sacred Concertos in the 1780s and 1790s, before he was appointed Kapellmeister to the court ensemble in St. Petersburg. Heidi Kirmsse has added a German singing text to the five most popular pieces from the complete volume (CV 4.111). The festive Concerto no. 6 Ehre sei Gott in der Hohe is for Christmas, and no. 9 Heut ist der Tag, den Gott, der Herr, gemacht for Easter. No. 15 Lasst uns singen, kommt herbei is in the major key and is a very effective piece. Tchaikovsky edited Bortniansky's sacred works and is said to have particularly admired no. 32 O lass mich, Herr, mein Gott, erkennen mein Ziel. Bortniansky himself probably best liked no. 33 Sag, meine Seele, warum verzagest du? The work was sung at his funeral.*addition to the choral repertoire with works from the Orthodox liturgy/ Eastern Europe*includes the original Church Slavonic text underlaid (in transliteration).*eff ective solo/tutti alternationsScore available separately - see item CA.411100.

This work was commissioned for the choir of St. Paul's Old Church, Edinburgh, who gave the first performance on the 11th of June 1989 at St. Giles' Church, Edinburgh, conducted by Leslie Shankland. This is a setting in Scots of the passage in the Apocalypse where St. John hears a voice from the throne, that voice appearing here as soprano-alto duets from a distance, building, as Davies has said, ' fine bridge' from the time of the Edinburgh church to the present. Both vocal groups sing in translucent modal harmony with organ support.

Written in the composer's characteristic expressive ballad style, this sacred cradle song is a precious portrait of the newborn Savior. Juxtaposing the manger scene with the holy child's future ministry among us permeates the song with meaning and a deep sense of awe. The chorus is a moment of worship that will bring power to the singing, making this music more than a performance. Inspiring poetry plus thoughtful music equals a truly memorable devotional anthem. The cantata Erforsche mich Gott und erfahre mein Herz BWV 136 was composed in Bach's first year as Kantor of St. Thomas's in Leipzig and was first performed on the 8th Sunday after Trinity, the 18th July 1723. The librettist is unknown. The title of the cantata is taken from verse 23 of Psalm 139: Erforsche mich Gott und erfahre mein Herz; prufe mich und erfahre, wie ich's meine. (Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts) The opening chorus forms an extended fugue, framed by string writing bursting with energy. The obbligato horn accentuates and enriches the movement with a special tonal color. The alto aria in F sharp minor (movement 3) comprises a trio movement with an oboe d'amore as solo instrument in a contrasting range - a presto middle section which dramatically charges the words Denn seines Eifers Grimm vernichtet (For the fury of its zeal will destroy). In the duet (movement 5) the text is sung by tenor and bass line by line, sometimes imitating contrapuntally, and sometimes both singing together dramatically in homophonic writing. A simple chorale setting to the melody Auf meinen lieben Gott concludes the cantata. Particularly charming here is the violin which joins the four vocal parts as an independent part.
