This piece was originally written for Violin and Piano and if the 'New World' Symphony and the 'American' String Quartet are the best-known products of Anton n Dvorak's years in the United States the little Sonatina in G major(sometimes called the 'Indian Lament' Sonatina) may well be the most obscure; yet it is a charming work that deserves better than its relegation to the learning books of young violinists. The Sonatina is in four movements:Allegro risoluto Larghetto Scherzo (molto vivace) and Allegro. The first movement's principal tune has a firm rhythmic spine its second tune a gentle plaintiveness; there is just a hint of Americanfolk music in the movement. The following Larghetto earned the Sonatina its nickname. The succession of its three melodies - one in G minor one in B flat major and one in G major - has to it the same wistfulness and thesame sudden brightening and then softening of mood that we hear in the famous slow movement of the 'New World' Symphony. The Scherzo takes the very first gesture of the Allegro risoluto as its starting-point. The finale isa substantial sonata-allegro movement with three wonderful themes: the opening syncopated idea in G major a subsidiary thought in E minor very dancelike and built around a repeating marcato cell and finally a rich tranquillomelody that closes the exposition. This adaptation for Flute and Piano by James Galway conveys all the spirit of the original.

Two Miniatures For Flute And Piano is a pair of short pieces from the late classical period carefully arranged as performance solos for the Flute with Piano. Beethovenâ??s Sonata In B Flat wascomposed ca. 1790 and is one of the very few pieces that he wrote for the Flute. The Rondo In E Minor was written in 1810 by Mozartâ??s youngest son Franz Xaver Wolfgang who often struggled to gain recognition on his ownmerits during his lifetime. Two Miniatures has been arranged by Louis Moyse (1912-2007) a noted French flautist pianist composer music editor and pedagogue. Raised in Paris he was educatedby his father Marcel also a famous flautist but spent most of his working life in North America.

Cecile Chaminade's Concertino For Flute And Piano provides quite a workout for the flutist with its wide-ranging, highly decorative solo part. A broad and graceful melody opens the work. After a more active central section, marked Più animato agitato in the score, a short oboe phrase leads into a cadenza for the soloist. A reprise of the opening melody and a rousing coda conclude this melodic and attractive work.

Description The 'Sonata d'arpeggione' was originally written for the guitarre d'amour or arpeggione - a kind of enlarged guitar that could be bowed cello-style. The instrument did not survive longer than a few years, but this piece by Schubert is a lovely reminder. This edition is transcribed for flute by James Galway and edited by Phillip Moll for the Great Performer's Edition series. The opening Allegro Moderato is built around a wistful melody. A second theme proceeds in gentle gusts of semiquavers (the arpeggione could not play fast notes with much volume at all, and so the Sonata's quicker portions are almost always marked piano or pianissimo). The Adagio is a rich but introverted musing on an almost hymn-like subject, at the end Schubert invites the soloist to improvise a brief transition into the final, multi-sectioned Allegretto . Songlist Sonata (Per Arpeggione)
