Edward Gregson completed Tributes in the summer of 2010. Lasting some 16 minutes, there are five pieces in the set, each dedicated to a different composer and a different clarinettist (with whom Gregson had long musical associations). Each of the dedicatee composers wrote wonderfully for the Clarinet and, as a tribute to them, Gregson tried to invade, indeed imitate, their stylistic worlds in these pieces. They are as follows: To Francis Poulenc (for Emma Johnson) - a rather dreamy toccata, lyrical in feel, but interrupted by typically quirky and disruptive rhythmic episodes. To Gerald Finzi (for John Bradbury) - slow and lyrical with long melodic arches. To Igor Stravinsky (for Linda Merrick) - asymmetric rhythms dominate, with wide leaps in the solo line and bitonal harmony on the Piano. To Olivier Messiaen (for Nicholas Cox) - based on the ravishing slow movement for Cello in his Quartet for the End of Time, a seamless melody is woven around ever-changing repeated chords on the Piano. To Béla Bartók (for Michael Collins) - the most virtuoso of the set - after a slow introduction, a swirling folk-like dance unfolds, mirroring Bartok's penchant for simple modal shapes and ostinati rhythms. / Clarinette Et Piano

Gregson's Clarinet Concerto was completed in 1994 by commission for the BBC and was first performed by the BBC Philharmonic with Michael Collins in Manchester April 1994 (later recorded on Chandos CHAN 10105). The writing is highly challenging pushing the instrument and its performer to the limits with some formidable glissandi and stark contrasts. This edition features a piano reduction of Gregson's orchestral material.

Pindar is Dead is a short scherzo for clarinet and piano written in 1968 for Alan Hacker who gave it its first performance in London that year. Pindar is Dead is from Louis MacNeice and the poem expresses disillusionment at the banal activities of an Easter bank holiday. Dalby's music is simple and lighthearted and includes some of the effects with which Alan Hacker was experimenting at that time. The composer's use of the title refers goodnaturedly to his own disillusionment at the August bank holiday which he spent writing it.

Commissioned by The Mühlfeld Trio in 1988 Lullaby is one of a pair of pieces by Lefanu based around twilight and night. The piece features six miniatures illustrating a mother's experiences watching her child drifting into slumber. The miniatures are performed without breaks as one continuous piece with fluctuations surprises and long stretches of blissful chords and undulating textures. Charles Camilleri (1931-2009) was a Maltese composer and academic. His compositions were often inspired by the folk traditions of his native Malta which in turn drew on a melting-pot of European Mediterranean and African cultures. He was also Professor of Composition at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto and later became the first Professor of Music at the University of Malta. Divertimento No. 2 was written for solo Clarinet with Piano in three movements the first of which features on the ABRSM Grade 8 Syllabus for Clarinet. It is a light-hearted work which would also be suitable for any recital orconcert.
