Johann Stamitz is considered the founding father of the Mannheim school of musical innovation. His two sons Carl and Anton were important members of the group as well. He was instrumental in setting the four-movement symphonic structure and the sonata form.Concertmaster of the Orchestra in Mannheim Stamitz wrote more than fifty symphonies and many other works. This work has been credited to Stamitz though he wrote little for the Trumpet and the title page of the work bears no signature. Some scholars believe the work to be that of Johann Georg Holzbogen. It has been recorded however as Concerto in D for Trumpet and the missing parts have been reconstructed bycomposer and arranger Alan Boustead. The style of the work falls in the time between our later delineations of the Baroque and Classical eras and the writing is typical energetic with quite an exciting solo part for the Trumpet.

For Trumpet And Piano-This Sonata by John McCabe was commissioned by Simon Debruslais and derives its underlying material from William Byrd’s motet 'Haec Dies' from his 1591 collection of Cantiones Sacrae. An outline of the motet is “hidden” within the texture of the music but never stated directly. The Sonata employs that beautiful instrument the Flugelhorn (beloved of Vaughan Williams and Miles Davis) for the first two main sections switching to D Trumpet (familiar from Baroque music) for the final part which is faster than the earlier ones. The first section is moderately-paced and obsessively circles around particular intervals notably parallel ornear-parallel fifths (possibly my revenge on the academic world). The middle part of the work is slow framed by very brief scherzando trio-like sections. The piece lasts about 17 minutes.

Austin Boothroyd has confronted the problem of keeping the beginner interested from Lesson One. The twelve pieces in Up We Go enable the trumpet student to experience the satisfaction of ensemble performance with only a limited number of notes. As security increases so the progressively more difficult pieces will be found to complement the vital technical practice between lessons.
