Cette miniature bipartite, qui tranche dans le répertoire pour clarinette par son mélange judicieux de lyrisme et d'écriture brillante, dénote une influence du style classique et romantique en même temps qu'elle montre le talent précoce du compositeur. Notre édition s'appuie sur le seul manuscrit qui nous est parvenu, conservé à la Bibliothèque royale de Copenhague. The Dane Carl Nielsen was one of the most original composers at the turn of the 20th century. Based on the German Romantic tradition he developed his own musical language, especially in his symphonies that are still played very frequently. He also, however, often turned to chamber music settings. Canto serioso was originally written as an audition piece for the Copenhagen Opera Orchestra, where the position of low horn player was to be filled. Thus Nielsen's fairly short work makes the most of the low register and the instrument's sonorous mid-range. A welcome addition to the late Romantic repertoire for horn! / Cor Et Piano

This accurate critical edition of Symphonic Suite contains extensive notes on the method of revision and comments on the historical context of the work by Mina F. Miller. With it's heart rooted firmly in the Romantic era tradition it is dynamic and has an advanced harmonic approach which became characteristic of Nielsen's work.

Dance Of The Cockerel (Hanedans) from the opera Masquerade by Carl Nielsen arranged for for Piano Duet (4 hands) by Esther Bobrova Lange. Arranger's preface: Dance of the Cockerel is a ballet insertion from Act Three of Carl Nielsen's opera Masquerade it is written for a large symphony orchestra. In this version for piano duet (four hands) I used the full orchestral score making sure that the essential orchestra parts were included. The melodic parts and the accompaniment are equally distributed between the primo and secondo parts. The nuances and articulations are written according to the originalscore yet with consideration to the possibilities of the piano. In one of his letters Carl Nielsen wrote that Dance of the Cockerel is like a polonaise. Presumably he meant that it should be played with pride and dignity in order to characterize a young cockerel surrounded by adoring hens that fight for his favour. (Esther Bobrova Lange)
