Cette nouvelle édition indique que la composition populaire de Mozart est une oeuvre mature datant de son temps à Vienne, contrairement aux hypothèses précédentes, et que la terminaison traditionnelle ne correspond pas à la version originale. Les barres de clôture bien connus, qui ont évidemment été inclus dans cette édition, n'étaient pas en fait écrit par Mozart lui-même, mais probablement par August Eberhard Müller, qui ainsi en forme de la pièce se tenir debout sur ses propres. Version de manuscrit de Mozart toutefois, tel que documenté dans la première édition, finit dix barres plus tôt sur une corde septième dominante, laissant la voie ouverte pour la poursuite du développement et rendant concevable que la fantaisie a été écrit initialement comme une introduction à une sonate en ré majeur (à l'autre des fin sonates, 576 K, en fait). Avec cette information, l'édition ajoute une dimension totalement nouvelle à l'exécution de cette pièce largement connue. / Piano

for Woodwind Quintet-These two extraordinary works of late Mozart KV 594 and KV 608 were both composed to fulfill a commission for a memorial exhibit in Vienna to be played in a “mechanical clock organ.” The term “fantasy” or“fantasia” came to be affixed to these works later and is more descriptive and less cumbersome than the term Mozart listed in his own catalogue “Ein Stüke für ein Orgelwerk in ein Uhr.” They are also variouslytitled “Adagio und Allegro in f für ein Orgelwerk” and “Allegro und Andante (Fantasie in f) für eine Orgelwaltze.”The first of these composed between the monumental String Quintet in D and the Piano Concertoin Bb KV 595 is an A-B-A form comprised of an f minor Adagio opening and closing with a contrapuntal Allegro at its heart. KV 608 is more complicated opening with an f minor section reminiscent of a French Overture followed by a fugue in fminor then an Andante aria followed by a return to the opening and then a more complex version of the fugue.Despite the frustration that Mozart expressed (in a letter to Constanze) with the sound world of these mechanical devices KV 594and 608 are remarkable works which stand at an intersection incorporating what he learned about counterpoint studying at the foot of Bach while looking ahead to the emotional and harmonic poignancy of Schubert.

A lovely and typical exempliary example of Mozart's skill this Fantasy is set for a Wind Quintet.

Fantasia In F Minor for Strings (1799) after the Organ Piece for Mechanical Organ K.608.Despite their high quality Mozart?s works for unusual instruments or instrumental combinations often receive scant attention. One of these remarkable compositions is a piece for mechanical Organ K. 608 that he wrote for ? Müller?s Art Gallery ? in March 1791. By 1799 it had already appeared in print in Vienna as a fantasy for Piano four-hands.But there were also other transcriptions including one for two Flutes and another for String Quartet.Several sources and later editions attest to the popularity of this contemporary stringarrangement of 1799. Our new volume edited by Christopher Hogwood takes the relevant sources into account.It contains a trilingual preface (Eng./Ger./Cz.) discussing the work?s history and performance practice as well as a detailed critical report.- Almost unknown music from Mozart?s final year.- Transcription of 1799 for String Quartet.- Additional Double Bass part provided to allow performances with Chamber Orchestra.- Detailed preface critical report (Eng./ Cz ./Ger.). This new edition indicates that Mozart’s popular composition is a mature work dating from his time in Vienna contrary to previous assumptions and that the traditional ending does not correspond to the original version. The well-known closing bars which have of course been included in this edition were not in fact written by Mozart himself but probably by August Eberhard Müller who thereby shaped the piece to stand on its own. Mozart’s manuscript version however as documented in the first edition ends ten bars earlier on a dominant seventh chord leaving the way open for further development and making it conceivable thatthe Fantasie was originally written as an introduction to a sonata in D major (to another of the late sonatas K 576 in fact). With this information the edition adds a totally new dimension to the performance of this widely known piece.
