Johannes Brahms’ late Piano works in the form of the two editions HN 36 (paperbound) and 37 (clothbound) have been a cornerstone of the Henle catalogue ever since the early 1950s. In 2011 the volume with Pianopieces (HN 6014) was published in the new Brahms Complete Edition an edition of these important works that reflected the latest in scholarly research. Having already published single volumes of the Urtext editions ofopus numbers 76 79 and 116 119 with the up-to-date musical text in the Complete Edition Henle are now rounding off this Brahms project by publishing the revised volume of collected works available as a classicpaperbound clothbound or handy study edition. Easy Piano Pieces with Practising Tips-With the new Urtext Primo series the Wiener Urtext Edition wants to close the gap arising at the point of transition to additional lessons after having studied a Piano method. Beginning with a performance level which is outlined by pieces such as Bach's Minuet in G (BWV Anh. 116) Mozart's Minuet in F (KV 5) or Schumann's Wilder Reiter (Op. 68/8) works by three different composers are selected for each volume of the Urtext Primo series with the aim of offering Piano pupils (or even adults who want to resume Piano playing) a wide range of repertoire pieces on the basis of which they can enhance their technical and musical skills. Revised edition of HN 119-In 1879 about ten years before Johannes Brahms composed his late melancholic piano pieces he wrote the two Rhapsodies op. 79 two markedly passionate and comparatively extensive works. In a letter to the convalescent ClaraSchumann Brahms spoke in a typically understated fashion about the two pieces ?with which you can really run riot and test whether the course of treatment has actually had any effect?. We prefer to agree with Brahms? friendElisabeth von Herzogenberg: ?the fact that the g minor is my favourite does not make me insensitive towards the intensely prickly beauty of the one in b minor?. Brahms? popular 16 ?Waltzes? opus 39 composed in 1866 for four hands were transcribed by Brahms one year later for two hands. At the request of his publisher Brahms also wrote an easier version of the work for solo piano. Brahms himself described the first version as suitable for 'reasonable hands' that is for proficient players and the easier version as 'perhaps for prettier hands' that is for domestic music-making. He initially described the latter version to his publisher as a 'children?s edition'. The catchy and musically easily accessible pieces are among the composer?s most popular works and are particularly suitable for piano students and lovers of the Romanticrepertoire.Both versions of the ?Waltzes? op. 39 (BA 9602 BA 9603) are available in separate editions and form an important contribution to Bärenreiter?s series of Brahms?s works in scholarly-critical Urtext editions. He remained rooted in tradition despite changing trends but is responsible for much of the development of variations whether used independently or layered to create complex and thematic cycles.
