The piano pieces opp. 116-119 were written in 1892/93 and are the last collections of pieces which Brahms wrote for the instrument. Le séjour de Johannes Brahms à Bad Ischl durant l'été 1893 fut fructueux. Hormis les pièces op. 118, il composa également son dernier cycle pour piano, l'opus 119.
