Piano Pieces op. 118 no. 1-6-Johannes Brahms' Piano Pieces Op. 118 Nos. 1- 6. Henle Urtext edition. When his contemporaries heard the works that Johannes Brahms had composed during his summer holiday in Ischl in1893 the Piano Pieces Op. 118 they were delighted. Clara Schumann was one of the first to be allowed to get to know the new pieces and she attested that they contained ?a wealth of sentiment in the smallestof dimensions?. Philipp Spitta fittingly said that the works were ?perfect for slowly absorbing in solitude and tranquillity?.Opus 118 contains two of the composer?s best-known miniatures the Intermezzoin A major and the Romanze in F major. This volume based on the musical text in the New Brahms Complete Edition is highly recommended to all those who wish to immerse themselves in the world of Brahms' late works.

Par BRAHMS JOHANNES. The Piano Pieces Op. 119 are less a loose collection of pieces than a self-contained cycle. Johannes Brahms's piano work reach their conclusion and fulfilment in these pieces, and the forebodings of death in the E-flat minor Intermezzo Op. 118 #6 are metamorphosed into late-Romantic otherworldliness.
Johannes Brahms wrote to Clara Schumann about the Intermezzo Op. 119 #1: 'I am tempted to copy out a little piano piece for you, since I would like to know how you find it. It is full of dissonances! They may be correct and legitimate - but perhaps not to your liking, in which case I wish they were less correct but more appealing and to your taste. The little piece is exceptionally melancholic, and it would be an understatement to say that it must 'be played very slowly'. Every bar and eyery note must sound ritard., as if one wanted to squeeze the melancholy with ecstasy and contentment out of every single one of those dissonances! Oh God, the description alone will make you eager!'
Ulrich Mahlert has revised this edition of the 'Klavierstücke' Op. 119 on the basis of the author's copy of the composer, and wrote a detailed and informative preface to the new edition./ Répertoire / Piano

Easy Piano Pieces with Practising Tips-With the new Urtext Primo series the Wie...(+)
Easy Piano Pieces with Practising Tips-With the new Urtext Primo series the Wiener Urtext Edition wants to close the gap arising at the point of transition to additional lessons after having studied a Piano method. Beginning with a performance level which is outlined by pieces such as Bach's Minuet in G (BWV Anh. 116) Mozart's Minuet in F (KV 5) or Schumann's Wilder Reiter (Op. 68/8) works by three different composers are selected for each volume of the Urtext Primo series with the aim of offering Piano pupils (or even adults who want to resume Piano playing) a wide range of repertoire pieces on the basis of which they can enhance their technical and musical skills. Thepieces' range of levels of difficulty is relatively narrow so that the volume can be used continuously over a period of about two years. This is what distinguishes the Urtext Primo approach from almost all common anthologies. The selected repertoire takes into account not only pieces of the classic canon of lessons but also lesser known works which are in no way of less importance for Piano lessons. The Urtext Primo volumes are published in the internationally recognised standard of the Wiener Urtext editions. The explanations included in each volume shall help to deepen the knowledge of musical styles music history and Piano playing. A repertoire chart at the end of each volume gives a rough overview of the levels of difficulty of the selected pieces. Volume 4 combines works of the German Romanticism by Schumann Brahms and Theodor Kirchner. Apart from well known pieces from Schumann's 'Album for the Youth' and the easiest waltzes from opus 39 (in the easier version) by Brahms the selection contains the attractive set of variations from Schumann's first Youth Sonata Op. 118/1 and Brahms’ Saraband in A minor WoO 5/1 as well as a number of pleasant pieces by Theodor Kirchner which continue the tonal air of Schumann and Brahms in easy playable pieces.

Sonatas op.120 for Clarinet and Piano-In 1894 Johannes Brahms asked the clarinettist Richard Mühlfeld to visit him during his beloved summer sojourn in Ischl adding “It would be really wonderful if you brought your B flat Clarinet with you andif you were in no great hurry” – for the two Sonatas Op. 120 were waiting to be rehearsed. The first performances were given privately directly afterwards and the press enthusiastically reported: “Thesonatas [...] are wonderful and will cause a great sensation”. These were the last chamber pieces Brahms wrote before his death and are considered two of the great masterpieces in the Clarinet repertoire.

Revised edition of HN 119-In 1879 about ten years before Johannes Brahms composed his late melancholic piano pieces he wrote the two Rhapsodies op. 79 two markedly passionate and comparatively extensive works. In a letter to the convalescent ClaraSchumann Brahms spoke in a typically understated fashion about the two pieces ?with which you can really run riot and test whether the course of treatment has actually had any effect?. We prefer to agree with Brahms? friendElisabeth von Herzogenberg: ?the fact that the g minor is my favourite does not make me insensitive towards the intensely prickly beauty of the one in b minor?. Both of these popular works have now been revised on the basis of thenew Brahms Complete Edition.

At the request of his publisher Brahms also wrote an easier version of the work for solo piano. Editor: Katrin Eich Fingering: Andreas Boyde Brahms mainly composed the eight Piano Pieces op. 76 in summer 1878 in the summer resort of Pörtschach at Lake Wörth. Theodor Billroth, a close friend, was enthusiastic about the new works: ?These are magnificent pieces, beautiful and interesting to play. They lie so well under the hand for those who are a little used to Schumann?s and Chopin?s technique that it is a pleasure to practise them.? As the volume ?Piano Pieces? was published in 2011 as part of the Johannes Brahms Complete Edition (HN 6014), we are now replacing the previous volume HN 118 with this new one, presenting these ?magnificent pieces? in the musical text of the Complete Edition, accompanied by revealing commentaries detailing their genesis and publication.

Piano
