White Light was commissioned by Fumiko Teramoto, oboist with the Musashino Grand Concert Band from Tokyo, Japan. The request was for a moderately slow piece, of intermediate difficulty, which included White in the title, as this is her lucky colour. Composer Philip Sparke decided to use this suggestion to write a piece that was bright and light in terms of harmony and colour, with much use of simple major and minor chords and an emphasis on pure and transparent timbres. He was also keen to capture the essence and history of the oboe as a solo instrument - the piece is pastoral in character and often almost baroque in style. The composer used this suggestion to write a piece that was both bright and light in terms of harmony, color and orchestration, with much use of simple major and minor chords and an emphasis on the pure, transparent timbres of the upper woodwinds of the band; he was also keen to capture the essence and history of the oboe as a solo instrument. The piece is pastoral in character and often almost baroque in style. It opens with a chorale-like passage on flutes and clarinets; the soloist enters with a recitative over trilling clarinets. The main theme is then introduced, accompanied by the woodwinds. After a short bridge passage, a change of key heralds a second theme by the soloist, with gentle brass punctuations. This builds to a climax, ending on a high trill from the soloist. After short passage over a timpani roll, the band recalls the main theme, taken up once again by the soloist. This leads to a short cadenza before the closing bars bring the work peacefully to a close.

This work takes both its name and inspiration from a lighthouse “Sword Cape†that keeps watch near Japan’s naval base. The piece describes how, come rain or shine, the lighthouse bids a safe journey to departing ships, guides them during their travels and eventually welcomes them home again. The music evokes many musical images - grand ships sailing by, white-capped waves, the deep blue of the ocean and the light of ‘sword cape†as it silently guides ships over the mysterious waters.Dieses Werk wurde von einem Leuchtturm mit dem Namen Schwert-Kap“ inspiriert, der in der Nähe des Marinestützpunkts von Japan steht. L’origine del titolo ha due significati: da una parte si ispira al faro di Tsurugizaki (letteralmente “estremit della spadaâ€), la cui luce serve come punto di riferimento tra la terra ed il mare, e dall’altra alla luce emanata dalla spada che appartiene alla grande tradizione degli ufficiali di marina. Una marcia luminosa!

This composition tells the story of a quest to find truth, which is relative and constantly changing. It is often to be found in the place where water becomes steam, somewhere in Between on the dividing line between Ying and Yang, somewhere in a twilight zone between dark and light, between Black and White. Black, White & In Between was conceived as a concertino for violin and string orchestra. It has been recorded by the London Philharmonic Orchestra under direction of the composer with Marta Abraham as soloist.
