For this edition, Carsten Klomp has transferred the orchestral movement of the 1st cantata from Johann Sebastian Bach's Christmas Oratorio to the organ. It not only enables a performance with a reduced line-up, but also a tonally appealing and surprisingly coherent rendition of this wonderful music. The way the voices are distributed on the manuals and pedal and the balance between virtuosity and good playability ensure both proximity to the original score and an organ-appropriate implementation. Instead of a simple piano reduction on the organ, this version offers an independent performance option that allows the organ to be used in all of its facets and possibilities. The vocal parts (solos and choir) are identical to the edition of the original version (Carus 31.248/00), so that the piano reduction and choral score can be used.

This cantata is a composition by Kuhnau for the first of the Christmas holidays [Christmas Day] and one of his most extensive works. It is underlaid with the free poetry of a hitherto anonymous author, not including any Bible or chorale texts. Though the dating has not yet been clarified, the structure - two recitative-aria pairings, framed by two magnificent tutti movements - indicates a genesis period within the last years of the composer's tenure as St. Thomas cantor in Leipzig. Additional indications are the triple use of the da capo form as well as the four-part vocal setting, partly differentiated in solo and tutti, taking the individual parts to the limits of their ambitus as was later customary with Johann Sebastian Bach.Particularly noteworthy are two details of the instrumentation: Firstly, there are three violin parts in the score, the first of which has to master an exceptionally virtuoso solo part. Secondly, in the third movement, Kuhnau expressly notates an obbligato organ solo part, not to be found in any of his other extant compositions. This virtuosic part also already foreshadows the later and far more famous obbligato organ parts in various Bach cantatas.

Liszt finished the original work for piano two hands in 1876 which he arranged for piano duet some weeks later and dedicated to his grand-daughter Daniela von Bülow. The series belonging to the late piano works consists of three volumes. In the first transcriptions of early christmas carols can be found while the remaining two hold mostly genre pictures. Characteristic of the majority of the pieces is an intimate, lyrical mood and a sense of devotion that surrounds the feast. The prerequisites of rendering these items include a high degree of musical intelligence and refined taste. Virtuosic capabilities are mainly required by the last two movements of portrait character entitledUngarisch and Polisch. The harmonies and effects of the cycle point already beyond Romanticism and anticipate the music of the beginning of the 20th century.

Sunday in the Park was written for tenor horn virtuoso Sheona White, and commissioned by her partner, Matt Wade, as a Christmas present. Composer Philip Sparke had known and admired Sheona’s playing for many years, having produced her firstsolo CD and written pieces for her previously. Both composer and performer are huge fans of the late Karen Carpenter, Sheona in part modelling her sound on the singer’s sultry voice; so it was decided that this new solo would be a piece which, whilstnot being a ‘Carpenters’ pastiche, paid tribute to their relaxed style and rich harmonic language. Sunday in the Park opens with an accompanied cadenza for the soloist, which leads to a gentle rhythmic melody with a laid-back feel. This istaken up by the band but the soloist sparks a change of mood by introducing a faster light rock interlude. This reaches a climax, at which point the music unwinds until the original mood returns. A variation on the original melody leads to a shortcadenza from the soloist, which brings the work to a peaceful close.

Norda Tango (Northern Tango) was inspired during a circus production in 1996. The music, played live by an accordion duo, defined the atmosphere and the action of a virtuoso trapeze artist. In 1997 Foppe Jacobi rewrote Norda Tango for accordion orchestra to be performed at a regional accordion festival.
