Auli s Sallinen (b. 1935) is one of the most famous Finnish contemporary composers. In his early instrumental works, Sallinen was still seeking to establish a style of his own. He had studied at the Sibelius Academy in the late 1950s, first with Aarre Merikanto - a composer representing a national brand of Neoclassicism - and then with Joonas Kokkonen, at that time just transitioning from Neoclassicism to dodecaphony. Twelve-tone music had won fairly widespread acceptance in contemporary Finn-ish music, and Sallinen was influenced, too. The Variations are Sallinen's first real work for the cello - an instrument that would later be one of his favourites, its warm, deep voice corres-ponding to his music's often dark undercurrent. The Variations for Cello and Orchestra, Op. 5 were composed in 1961-1962 and premiered in October 1962. The basic motif consists of a set of three descending intervals stated by the cello at the beginning: D-D flat-F, C-B-G and B flat-A-F sharp. Their use as basic material is a ref-lection of the composer's dodecaphony-oriented period, and variation of this material provides the framework for the piece. Variations for Cello and Orchestra are now published for the first time. Available are a reduction for cello and piano, study score and complete performance material with orchestra.

“Vari ations on an Ancient Tune” by Carlos Salzedo is the third and final work of a series called Three Pieces'for Solo Pedal Harp. Difficult to play, it requires good mastering of the instrument and of its technique, including the pedals. Using the full range of the instrument, this work features numerous trills, glissandos and accidentals among other technicalities and is divided between really fast and more quiet parts. Really delightful, this melodious piece is composed of a main theme and eleven variations: Main Theme (Maestoso) is composed of chords I. A tempo, Graziamente II. Tempo di Bourrée III. Scherzando IV. L'Istesso tempo V. Maestoso VI. Vigorosamente VII. Molto piú lento VIII. Vivo risoluto IX. Lento, tempo di Barcaruola X. Como un preludio XI. Fuga Finishing on the main theme “A Tempo,” this wonderful work is an amazing piece to include in a concert or a recital. Carlos Salzedo (1885-1961) was a French harpist and composer who wrote and transcribed numerous pieces for the harp. He also wrote some pedagogical publications for harpists.

Palestrina' s Missa Iste confessor is contained in the Missarum liber quintus, the composer's fifth book of masses which was first printed in Rome in 1590 and reprinted the following year in Venice. Palestrina dedicated this book of masses to the art-loving Duke Wilhelm V of Bavaria, the lord and patron of his famous contemporary Orlando di Lasso. The thematic substance of the mass is based on the old, eponymous hymn melody from the Commune Confessorum. The various parts of the hymn not only constitute the melodic framework for the principal themes of the different movements, but are also heard in melodic and rhythmic variations at a great number of places within the movements. The Missa Iste corifessor had been published several decades ago by Breitkopf & Hartel in a practical edition prepared by Hermann Bauerle. Our edition is based on the print of 1590, a copy of which was consulted at the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek in Munich. For today's choral practice, it seemed preferable to transpose the mass, which was originally in the eighth church mode. The note values were reduced by a half and, departing from the original, the closing notes are reproduced uniformly as longae. The Missa Iste confessor has long ranked as one of the most widely admired masses of the Roman master. The compact dimensions, the simplicity and suaveness of the melodic lines, the model vocal declamation all constitute assets which elevate this mass to an exemplary level and reveal the hand of the great master in spite of its brevity.Rudolf Ewerhart, May 1961 Munster/Westfalen.

Juha ni Nuorvala's (b. 1961) Variations ex Bene quondam for string orchestra was commissioned by the Ostrobothnian Chamber Orchestra in 2017. Collaboration with the musicians led to experiments with microtonality. The work is based on a late medieval song from the Finnish collection Piae cantiones (Pious songs). The song is processed with various means of contemporary music. It also meets the New Age of California - the musical scene of the teenaged composer. The duration of the work is 25 minutes, and the performance material is available for hire from the publisher.

Johanna Senfter (1879-1961) was a pupil of Max Reger.Beginning with an expressive violin theme in a densely packed, 'Brahms-like' piano setting, the classical four-movement work centres around two capricious and playful movements: Lustig, nicht zu schnell is how the second movement begins, a fugal gem working with all kinds of contrapuntal tricks. This is followed by a scherzo-like, wittily flirting Rasch. The finale begins with a melodically simple tune in an almost folksong-like tone which, by a sequence of character variations, builds to a grand gesture which eventually leads back to the initial cantabile - with the sonata coming to a quiet end. A valuable addition to the chamber music repertoire.

The Dutch patriottentijd (literally ‘Time of the Patriots’) was a period of political instability in the 1780s. The country was led by regents who were occupied with their own personal interests rather than dedicating themselves to the needs of the people. In this revolutionary period, the devoted republican Patriots were in conflict with the Orangists. A civil war followed, in which the Patriots were beaten and driven away by a Prussian army. This composition is an abstract piece inspired by the Patriots. The thematic material is based on the Dutch war song ‘Merck toch hoe sterck’. Its powerful minor melody, which has its origins in the Eighty Years’ War, isrecognizable throughout the work, presented in variations of constantly shifting character.
