When it comes to paying tribute to Heinrich Schutz's compositional achievement, in his art his treatment of the text and language must be mentioned first. The Geistliche Chor-Music 1648, a collection of 29 motets for five to seven voices and one of his most important works, is characterized by he carefully thought-out musical realization of the meaning of the text. In his detailed foreword to the collection the composer presented these as models for composition without a basso continuo - it was his conviction that very young composer should obtain the properfoundation for a good counterpoint. Despite the strict counterpoint, stylistically speaking from an earlier era, the Musicus poeticus imbued his works with a strongly expressive character. The individual motets are structured differently and they differ - according to content - in their length and character. Short, rather straightforward pieces stand alongside long, worked-out pieces with greater expressive intensity, and cheerful, optimistic works are juxtaposed with plaintive ones. Score available: KP00247 Ruders writes: Quartet No. 3 Motet was written in 1979, commissioned by the Lerchenborg music-week of 1979 during which it was first performed by Quatuor Bernede. This short one-movement quartet is a kind of modernization of the 14th century French motets, a cadeau to this weird and fantastic music whose abstract and almost deprecatory, introvert expression appears unaccountably modern and incredibly ancient at the same time. Motet is a sober, cool treatise on rhythm and statics, depicted in a Gothic, crypt-like atmosphere. The almost completely non-vibrato movement is suggestive of boys' choir, monks' processions, and the piercing sound of musical glasses. An ancient world is reborn and becomes the world of today.

This motet for soprano, strings and basso continuo, is the only one by Vivaldi to be preserved outside Italy. It is included in two manuscript collections in London: a set of parts in the Royal College of Music and a score in the British Library. The structure is the conventional one of two arias enclosing a short recitative and followed by a brilliant Alleluia. The incompleteness of the sources (the second evidently copied from the first) is of a rather unusual kind. The existing score comprises a vocal part, an instrumental bass and a first violin part. However, it is clear that there was originally at least one middle part (probably two, to match all the other surviving Vivaldi motets), since the bass part pauses frequently, and on these occasions the first violin part continues as an “upper” voice, not as a bass of the harmony. In the reconstruction, inner parts for second violin and viola have been added by the editor. The task was not difficult, since many passages find close parallels elsewhere in Vivaldi's music. The separate parts include a realization of the continuo by the editor.
