Modern French composer, organist and improviser, Jean Langlais (1907-1991) studied at the Paris Conservatoire where he won many prizes. He is best remembered for his Masses and Organ works, Nine Pieces being no exception. Published in 1945, the Nine Pieces for Organ reflect Langlais' compositional uses of Gregorian chant and polymodal harmonies. The Nine Pieces are entitled; 1) Song of Sorrow, 2) Song of Joy, 3) Song of Peace, 4) Heroic Song, 5) In quiet Joy, 6) Out of the depths have I cried unto Thee, 7) My soul longeth to depart in peace, 8) Prelude on an Anthem, and 9) Gregorian Rhapsody. All movements of Langlais' Nine Pieces for Organ are highly modern, yet provide an exciting and varied piece for the advanced level organist's repertoire..

This beautifully presented edition from Novello offers a full Mass setting alongside a Motet, both for large mixed chorus, by Tomas Luis De Victoria. Regarded by many as one of the greatest composers of Spanish renaissance polyphony, this Mass setting is rich in his characteristic tonalities and the textures of the sacred choral tradition. Alongside this is the original Motet upon which the Mass setting is based. Both are transcribed and edited by Andrew Parker. The pairing of the two works offers an exciting and fascinating performance opportunity, with the devout grandeur of the Mass set against the modesty of the original Motet. Missa Dum Complerentur for SAATTB voices. Motet: Dum Complerentur Dies Pentecostes for SSATB voices.

Of Josef Rheinberger's eighteen masses, five are for unaccompanied voices, four with accompaniment by a small instrumental ensemble and nine with organ. Among the last group the leicht ausfuhrbare (easy to perform) works take a special place: Considered by their composer as purely utility music, they achieved great popularity during his lifetime and soon became part of the standard repertory of small church choirs. The names of Michael Haydn's masses are associated either with a specific commission or with the composition's dedicatee. Thus, Haydn composed the Missa in honorem Sti. Gotthardi, also known as the Admont Mass, for the Admont Abbey located in the region of Styria, Austria, where Gotthard Kuglmayr was the Abbot. The mass combines formal concentration with liturgical function. The songlike melody, the unity of the motivic material, and the balanced harmony of solemn and lyrical passages show how intensively Haydn concerned himself with the genre. Due to its length and its orchestration the mass can be considered a type of missa solemnis. Fugues and fugal movements are completely missing from the Missa Admontis as is any kind of contrapuntal (including imitative) composition. In so doing, Haydn assured that the required understanding of the liturgical text would be achieved. Score and part available separately - see item CA.5453000.

Particularly during the early 1740s, Johann Sebastian Bach concentrated intensely on studying the compositional technique of strict vocal polyphony. As an inspiration, he studied the works of older masters, copying them and, for the most part, performing them as well. A set of single parts for the Missa canonica by Francesco Gasparini in an instrumentation by Bach were recently discovered in the collection of the former Ephoralbibliothek Weissenfels; some of the parts are in Bach's own handwriting. Gasparini was esteemed in Germany particularly as a master of elaborate counterpoint and audacious harmonic writing. Bach amended the music text with a view to certain aspects of performance practice, clearly following a very specific concept of sound organization. His interest in strict counterpoint was paralleled by a tangible re-orientation in Bach's own compositional technique at the beginning of the 1740s. Francesco Gasparini's Missa canonica therefore served as a practical model for the highly developed art of canon writing and the strict polyphony in Bach's late works, as we encounter them, for example, in the B minor Mass.
