Aurora Dances was commissioned by the Hong Kong-based Winter Band Festival, and consists of three movements, to be played without a break. ‘Aurora Borealis’ opens with florid woodwind figures and highlights different sections of the band in turn. The second movement ‘Aurora Australis’ leads to a sombre chorale, which builds to a full-band climax. The finale ‘Aurora Dances’ is characterised by rhythmic, dance-like themes. A central section features a contrasting legato melody, but this doesn’t dispel the energetic feel of the opening, which returns to close the work.Aurora Dances werd geschreven in opdracht van het Winter Band Festival in Hongkong. Het werk bestaat uit drie delen die in elkaar overlopen. ‘Aurora Borealis’ opent met sierlijke motieven in het hout en bevat korte, herhaalde frasen waarin de verschillende secties afwisselend in de schijnwerpers worden gezet. Zodiac Dances was commissioned by the Izumiotsu City Band, Osaka, Japan to celebrate their 50th anniversary. Sparke had previously written the piece, Prelude to a Celebration for the band, and in composing a new piece for their 50th anniversary wanted to personalise it to reflect the band’s history. He chose to write a set of six dance-miniatures based on the decades following the band’s foundation and the equivalent signs from the Japanese ‘Junishi’. During the piece, all aspects of true musicianship come to the surface. Energetic playing, phrasing, melodic music making, technique and a spectacular finale make this work a perfect test or concertwork! These four dances are written in a kind of neo renaissance style. Because of the fact that little technical demands are required from its performing artists, these dances are mainly meant for beginning groups, youth ensembles and also for orchestras in all kinds of small strengths. Jan Van der Roost originally had pedagogical intentions with this piece. Myriam Mees arranged Four Old Dances with the same intention for accordion orchestra with electronium and percussion ad libitum.Deze vier dansen zijn geschreven in een soort neorenaissancestijl. Gezien de geringe technische eisen die aan de uitvoerders gesteld worden, richten deze dansjes zich vooral op beginnende groepen, jeugdensembles en ook op allerhandekleine bezettingen. Jan Van der Roost had in eerste instantie pedagogische bedoelingen. Myriam Mees arrangeerde Four Old Dances met dezelfde intentie voor accordeonorkest met electronium en percussie ad libitum.Diese vier Tänze sind in einer Art Neorenaissance-Stil geschrieben. This arrangement of the popular Polovtsian Dances by Russian composer Borodin contains seven dances from the original manuscript, some of which have been used in the musical Kismet, as well as being performed by such famous names as Tony Bennett and Bing Crosby. Philip Sparke accepta et composa cette suite de danses en trois mouvements. Le premier mouvement est construit sur un moto perpetuo qui développe deux mélodies pétillantes en 6/8 : Dover Castle et The Fair Maid of Wickham.
