How vast is Mendelssohn's oeuvre? Most of his approx. 750 compositions were still unpublished in the 1960s. The publication of many early works within the framework of the Complete Edition has been gratefully noted by the musical world. Yet a scholarly, scientific overview of Mendelssohn's works was still missing. He was the last great composer of the 19th century without a complete work catalogue. Ralf Wehner's thematic catalogue closes this gap.It organizes the body of works into 26 groups and assigns each work its own MWV number. Within the groups, the individual pieces are arranged chronologically. Also included in the MWV are all known collective manuscripts and prints, information on works of dubious authenticity and on Mendelssohn's arrangements, as well as his editions of works by other composers. Wehner's work is based on the examination of material and information from more than 1,500 libraries, c. 15,000 auction catalogues and about 12,000 letters. The succinct account of the history of the work, its publication and reception gives the MWV its profile as a compact study edition. An overview on the MWV numbering system you will find on the webiste of the Sachsische Akademie der Wissenschaften zu Leipzig.

Judged by number of works, Giacomo Puccini left behind a relatively slender oeuvre . Nonetheless, the most popular of his operas as well as theminor piecespose some-times thorny bibliographical, editorial, and source-critical problems. The composer of La Boheme and Madama Butterfly constantly tinkered with his compositions, and the changes are reflected in a welter of conflicting printed editions. Dieter Schickling's detailed thematic catalogue brings order into this editor's nightmare while offering complete coverage of all of Puccini's music, including the surviving drafts. It is a standard reference work, not only for scholars and libraries throughout the world, but also for music antiquarians and autograph dealers.

For the first time all the known vocal works of Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach have been assembled in a list of compositions. In view of his method of working, arranging compositions by himself and others to create new works, the compilation of this list has necessitated a new definition of the concept of a work. Through detailed descriptions of sources, information concerning the published material, and musical examples, combined with the most important information concerning each work's history and that of its text, we have revealed for the musicologist, musician, or simply person interested in music the vocal works of the Hamburg Bach in an entirely new way.

The Dresden Kreuzkantor Gottfried August Homilius belongs to the composers whose works have been rediscovered in recent years. Previously almost forgotten, today he is rightly attracting increasing attention. Celebrated by his contemporaries to be accepted as the best church composer, his works are disseminated in countless copies and also frequently in arrangements. The complete, surviving works were examined for this first, exhaustive thematic catalog of the works of Gottfried August Homilius. Not only every work, but also every individual movement is provided with a music incipit and information concerning scoring, and different versions of a work or surviving versions are presented, as well as a list of all known manuscripts, editions, libretti, new editions and, whenever possible, arranged chronologically and geographically. Thus not only a reliable catalog of the works of the Dresden Kreuzkantor is presented here, but also a good deal on church music tradition and church history in the second half of the 18th century is examined and placed in perspective. The volume includes various tables and indexes which amplify the contents of the catalog and in addition important kantors and copyists from Homilius's era are presented in a lexical appendix.

At the time of his death in 1760, Christoph Graupner - a contemporary of Bach who supplied the Landgrave residing in Darmstadt with music for five decades from 1709 onwards - left a vast oeuvre which has hardly been explored to date: innumerable instrumental works and a massive body of more than 1400 sacred cantatas. The first volume of the Thematic Catalog of the sacred works has now been published. It contains the cantatas for the festive cycle of Christmas from the 1st Advent Sunday to the 5th Sunday of Epiphany. Extensive incipits of all the cantata movements fill a large part of the book which also includes indexes for, amongst others, chorale melodies and biblical quotations. Christoph Graupner (1683-1760) is one of the many composers who laid the groundwork for their careers as pupils at the St. Thomas school in Leipzig. After subsequently studying law in Leipzig he was initially employed as a harpsichordist at the Hamburg Opera, which was followed by his appointment to the position of Kapellmeister at the court of Darmstadt. He was selected for the position of Thomaskantor in 1723, but his patron in Darmstadt refused to release him. Graupner's more than 1,400 cantatas occupy a central position in the history of the Protestant church cantata. Here, for the first time, in this six-volume thematic catalog his entire opus is presented and elucidated by means of detailed incipits for each movement of each work, including all of the relevant information, such as scoring, history of the sources, dating and origin of the text. This Graupner catalog is an indispensable reference work for understanding the music of the Bach era. Score available separately - see item CA.2402900.

The catalogue of Edison Denisov's works includes 16 concertos. It was a genre to which he returned time and again throughout his life, from the Concerto for Cello and Orchestra of 1972 to the Double Concerto for Flute, Clarinet and Orchestra of 1996.In Denisov's music the role of the soloist, or rather the protagonist, is extraordinarily important, not so much for its virtuosity as for its confessional character. The solo part is a monologue distinguished by poetic diction and a very personal message from thecomposer. The dramaturgical conception of the Concerto for Saxophone and Orchestra, a reworking of the Viola Concerto of 1986, draws on traditional sonata form, thereby reaffirming the ubiquitous classicism in Denisov's thought. In this late work, we find all the typical features of his style: sinuous melodic lines layered into dense contrapuntal textures, and an interplay of orchestral colours, with pure sonorities contrasting with complex mixtures of sounds. It is a perfect dramaturgy that governs the evolution of the music to the very end. The first movement assumes the role of a sonata-allegro, with the standard formal sections of exposition, development, recapitulatio n and coda. The second movement is an Adagio for strings. The third takes the form of a little contrasting intermezzo that introduces both new thematic material and a new range of colours. Here tunefulness gives way to pointillism enriched with soniceffects. The only movement with a virtuosic solo part, its nervousness and inner tension set it worlds apart from the second and fourth movements that surround it. The fourth movement assumes the traditional form of a final set of variations. It is the dramaturgical and semantic heart of the concerto. The theme of the variations is Franz Schubert's Impromptu in B-flat major, op. 142, which in this case is 'born' from the celesta as the product of a dodecaphonic string cluster. This finale represents Denisov's homage to his great mentor, Schubert's music being for him a symbol of eternal and universal beauty. 'The attentive listener', Denisov stressed, 'will recognise that the Impromptu theme is already suggested very slowly in the course of the three preceding movements, not only thematically, but also psychologically. That's what makes the appearance of the Schubert theme sound so natural.' The variations relate to the variation genre less in their form than in their spiritual and conceptual metamorphoses. It is, one might say, 'music round about Schubert'. (Ekaterina Kouprovskaia-Denisova). p>

No musical family has made such a significant contribution to the history of European music as the Bach family from Thuringia, in Saxony. From the 17th through 19th centuries one finds outstanding musicians among the family who participated in all levels of musical life whether it be town, court or church music - their works span all genres of vocal and instrumental music and reflect the stylistic developments of the individual eras in which they lived. Within the framework of the Bach-Repertorium research project at the Sachsische Akademie der Wissenschaften zu Leipzig, thematic catalogs are being compiled for all members of the Bach family. With catalogs which include incipits, texts, tables and indexes, the compositions will be described using a unified set of criteria and they will be based on the latest musicological research. To distinguish him from his brothers, in the 18th century Johann Christoph Friedrich Bach was known as the Buckeburger Bach. His extensive opus encompasses all genres of instrumental and vocal music. Systematic research has led to the rediscovery of a number of works previously believed to have been lost, as well as to works which until now have been completely unknown; furthermore the existence of other lost works also has been verified. Thus today, for the first time an overview of the creative output of the second youngest Bach son is possible, which now occupies its own independent position in the history of 18th century music.
