One World deals with a fractured world (populist governments, plagues, climate change, human trafficking, disrespect for basic humanrights, terrorism, war) and heralds a vision of a peaceful and egalitarian planet. His vision for One World takes inspiration from diverse texts including the Bible, the Hindu Gayatri Mantra, the poetry of the English Romantic Percy Bysshe Shelley, African-American abolitionist Frances Harper (c1850) and Lebanese-American writer Kahlil Gibran. As in many of Jenkins's works, Carol Barratt contributes impactful text and adaptations. Written for the Enchanted Voices CD, this is one of many settings of texts either from the Beatitudes (or springing from them) available from this composer. For soloist, SS chorus (divisi), organ, cello, and handbells, the music has a light, ethereal feeling. A unison chant-line begins the piece unaccompanied. The organ enters with a drone as the chant continues. At the text “vocabuntur (called)†the voices split into three parts in a beautiful moment of radiance. There is a cello solo (13 measures) which restates the chant melody. The voice enter wordlessly as the cello continues. Finally, the chant melody reappears in the voices, in canon, as the music ends. This contemplative and serene piece was commissioned as a retirement gift for Canadian organist and choir director, Paul Merrit, andfirst performed in 2016. The setting of the well-known biblical words (Matthew 5:9) makes use of a simple repeating melody which gradually builds in intensity through the work. The end returns to the opening calmness, deeply effective in its simplicity. Todd's rich harmonies prevail, underpinned by a supportive piano accompaniment, which also adds colour to the texture.
