'In the Mandarin he finally breaks with the romantic tradition and also turns away from the artistic endeavours typical of the turn of the century. The pantomime refl ects for the fi rst time what Bartók had learnt from folk music, refined into a personal expression, an individual phraseology. He consciously settles a score with the ideology and the style of his youth.' György Kroó.

Cinque studi per orchestra (1959?60) clearly documents the process by which Maros - starting from Bartók's expressionist works written during the 1920s, especially The Miraculous Mandarin and The Night's Music -escaped from the earlier tonal, classicizing realm of music. The composition takes the form of a suite, with alternating notturno and scherzo movements. Decisive to the character of both are percussion instruments hitherto used solo only rarely in Hungarian orchestral practice. (Anna Dalos).

Bartok's Allegro Barbaro, composed in 1911 is one of his most famous solo piano works, written in his typical style using folk elements based on Hungarian Pentatonic and Romanian chromatic scales. The music has even been used on a composition by the Progressive rock group Emerson, Lake and Palmer from their 1970 debut album.
Ralph Sauer's brilliant arrangement for Trombone and Piano is reminiscent of the famous Trombone passage from the Miraculous Mandarin ballet suite.
This 3 minute work is suitable for advanced performers.
The sound clip is performed by Mr. Sauer with Mac Booke on piano.
