Char les Gounod, the 200th anniversary of whose birth falls in 2018, is known above all for his operas - Faust, Sapho, Romeo et Juliette, etc. But throughout his life Gounod was also a very religious man. As winner of the prestigious Prix de Rome in 1839, he spent an extended period in the Holy City and subsequently devoted several years exclusively to writing sacred music. For a time he even thought of becoming a priest and signed his letters Abbe Ch. Gounod. As well as several masses - including the famous St Cecilia Mass - he composed numerous smaller works for various scorings for use in the liturgy and other church services. This collection contains 20 smaller sacred motets for 4-6-part mixed choir with organ or piano accompaniment, mostly ad libitum.

The composer was drawn to the beautiful stillness and sadness of the poem by Christina Rossetti, which transcend its rigid sonnet structure, and allude via the epigraph to the mysterious Willow-Wood cycle by Christina's brother Dante Gabriel Rossetti. The music suggests a division of the poem into three stanzas, alternating with tranquil interludes (using the opening melody) representing the 'willow-wood' of the title, so that the listener is constantly reminded of the gentle surroundings. As the intensity of the text increases, so does the astringency of dissonance in the verses, reaching its apogee just before consonance breaks through at the crucial phrase 'one moment joined'. The simplicity of the vocal writing conveys the serenity of the setting, while simultaneously suggesting the austere melancholy of the lovers. An Echo from Willow-Wood was the winner of the Stainer & Bell Award for Choral Composition 2015.

The chorale cantata Straf mich nicht in deinem Zorn (O Lord, rebuke me not in thine anger), which was probably written in 1771, makes use of a poem by Johann Georg Albinus on the 6th Psalm. The seven stanzas of the original are realized in seven separate movements. The work’s composer, Johann Ernst Bach, received his musical training from his godfather, Johann Sebastian Bach. He later served in a dual capacity as public lawyer and organist in Eisenach, then from 1756 as Kapellmeister at the ducal court in Weimar.The well-known hymn melody, which has also survived with the text “Mache dich, mein Geist, bereit”, can be heard in all movements. As a setting of a penitential psalm, the cantata is particularly suitable for performance during Lent and Holy Week.
